HAMPTON - Col. William "Bill" Allen, USAF, Retired, passed away Thursday, March 16, 2017 at his home. He was born in Elizabeth City, NC and had been a long-time Peninsula resident. Col. Allen retired from the Air Force in 2000 after 30 years of honorable service to his country. He served in many capacities during his military career, including Missile Launch Officer, and Master Logistician, where he prepared the base camp for Operation Desert Shield. He also served during Operation Desert Storm and as a Logistics Group Commander. He earned his B.S. Degree from Saint Michael's College, as well as a Master's Degree from the University of Wyoming and a second Master's through the U.S. Air Force. Following his time in the service he became very involved in local High School sports as a member of the officiating crew for football, basketball, and girls fast-pitch softball events. He was also an active member of St. Jerome Catholic Church and was very devoted to his Parish family. He was an active member of the Knights of Columbus Council 5480. He is preceded in death by a sister, Zelda Allen. He is survived by his loving wife of 46 years, Helen L. Allen; his two children, William A. Allen, Jr. of Hampton, VA and Winser J. Allen of Miami, FL; his parents, James and Doris Allen of Elizabeth City, NC; three brothers, Ronnie Allen (Franscene) of Fayetteville, NC, Michael Allen of Hampton, VA, and William D. Allen (Pamela) also of Elizabeth City, NC; one sister, Linda Briggs (Wilbert) of Arlington, VA; and a host of nieces, nephews, and other extended family. A Chalice Service will be conducted at 6 p.m., Monday, March 20, 2017 at Weymouth Funeral Home with visitation to follow until 8 p.m, A Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 1:30 p.m., Tuesday, March 21, 2017 at St. Jerome Catholic Church by the Rev. Patrick Baffour-Akoto, followed by full Military Honors. Inurnment will be in the church columbarium. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to a favorite charityin Bill's memory. Arrangements are by Weymouth Funeral Home.
