DAN FILZEN

 

Dan Filzen, 53, of Owatonna, died peacefully June 3, 2017, after a courageous ten-year battle with cancer. His final days were spent surrounded by family and friends that Dan has touched in so many ways throughout his life.
Daniel Patrick Filzen was born February 14, 1964 in New Ulm, Minnesota to James and Elaine (Ubl) Filzen.
He attended New Ulm High School graduating in 1982 and Minnesota State University – Mankato graduating in 1986 with a bachelor's degree in Business and Finance and double minors in Accounting and Computer Information Systems.
Dan married Beth Schugel, his high school sweetheart and best friend on May 23rd, 1987. After working in Rochester, MN for a short period of time, he and Beth settled in Owatonna, Minnesota. Here they raised their two daughters, Leah and Amy and where Dan enjoyed much of his professional career working at Federated Insurance for 26 years.
Dan will be remembered fondly for his deep love for his Faith, family, his sense of humor, and his outstanding work ethic. His commitment to live life everyday without complaint and his focus on others in the midst of his heroic battle with cancer, have been and will continue to be an inspiration to his family and friends.
Dan enjoyed and appreciated people and anyone who spent time around him felt valued. He also enjoyed watching sporting events, especially those of his daughters and his nieces and nephews. In his spare time, Dan could be found outdoors working on landscaping and yard projects or inside devising new schemes to make people laugh or encourage them.
With a caring heart for people, Dan served generously with the Knights of Columbus, Parish Council of St. Joseph, Jaycees, and was a board member to the Catholic Education Memorial Fund and the Owatonna Basketball Association. Dan logged many hours coaching his daughters through Owatonna Park and Recreation Sports, Owatonna Basketball Association and AAU basketball and he was involved in the Owatonna Aquatic Center Fundraising Effort.
Dan is survived by his wife, Beth; daughters, Leah and Amy; mother Elaine Filzen, siblings Diane (Marty) Larson, David (Tammy) Filzen, Darlene Filzen, and Derek (Pam) Filzen. Also, mother-in-law Joleen Schugel, brother-in-laws Ron (Kay) Schugel, Stan (fiancé Penny) Schugel, Dan (Shelley) Schugel, Allen (Greta) Schugel and sister-in-laws Chris Schugel, Terese (Jeff) Gruber, Jodi Runck and 25 nieces and nephews and one great niece. Along with aunts, uncles and cousins.
He was preceded in death by his father, James Filzen, his father-in-law Stanley J. Schugel and his brother-in-law Dean Runck.
Mass of Christian Burial is set for Thursday, June 8, 2017 at 10:00 am at St. Joseph Catholic Church (512 – S. Elm Ave. Owatonna.) Friends may greet the family on Wed. June 7, 2017 at Brick – Meger Funeral Home (1603 – Austin Road Owatonna) from 3:00 – 8:00 pm and one hour before the funeral liturgy at the church. Interment will take place on Friday June 9, at 10:00 am at the New Ulm Catholic Cemetery.
