DONALD V. GLATTER

 

Donald V. Glatter, 92, of Amherst, died Wednesday, April 19, 2017 at his home. Mass
of Christian Burial will be 10:30 a.m., Monday, April 24, 2017 at St. James Catholic
Church, with Fr. Alex Borzych officiating. Burial will be at the Kearney Cemetery. A
wake service will be at 7:00 p.m., Sunday, April 23, 2017 at St. John Capistran
Catholic Church in Amherst. Visitation will be from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m., Sunday, April
23, 2017 at the church in Amherst and one hour prior to the service Monday at St.
James Catholic Church in Kearney. In lieu of flowers memorials are suggested to St.
John Capistran Catholic Church, Kearney Catholic High School Foundation, St. James
Catholic Church, or Amherst Public School Foundation.
Don was born March 30, 1925 on the family farm northeast of Amherst to Vincent and
Anna (Franke) Glatter. He graduated from Amherst High School in 1942. Don married
Helen M. Kusek on June 10, 1947 in Elyria, NE. He lived and worked on the family
farm northeast of Amherst his whole life. Don was a member of St. John Capistran
Catholic Church, Amherst Lions Club, Knights of Columbus, where he had served as
the Faithful Navigator, and served on the school board for District 45, Sunnyside.
Don enjoyed fast pitch softball, playing 3rd base and umpiring, fishing, especially for
catfish down at the river, dancing, playing pinochle, cribbage, bridge, shuffleboard,
shooting pool, and hunting. He was a good steward of the land and enjoyed gardening,
especially making pickles and horseradish, and giving it away to his friends and family.
He held the Class D mile record in Nebraska for 19 years at 4:36.7 seconds, and still
holds the Amherst High school mile record. He worked hard, played hard, and was a
storyteller. He loved his wife and family, and was strong in the Catholic Faith.
Donald is survived by his sons, L.D. Glatter and his wife Becky of Lawrence, KS,
David Glatter of Amherst, NE, John Glatter and his wife Barbara of Amherst, NE, Dan
Glatter and his wife Henrietta of Kearney, NE, Mark Glatter and his wife Kathy of
Kearney, NE, Michael Glatter of San Diego, CA, Matthew Glatter and his wife Crystal
of Sumner, NE, Donald J. Glatter and his wife Christina of Kauai, HI, Christopher
Glatter and his wife Stacie of Gretna, NE; daughters, Trish Glatter of Las Vegas, NV,
Mary Jo Sumrall and her husband Steve of Fraser, CO, Anita Trimble and her husband
Layne of Kearney, NE, Helen Glatter of Amherst, NE, and her friend Terry Pingel, of
Steele City, NE, Susan Gallagher and her husband John of Salem, OR; 23
grandchildren; 7 great grandchildren; sister, Sr. Ann Glatter of Concordia, KS;
brother-in-law, Tony Hittner of Salina, KS; sisters-in-law, Sr. Clara Frances Kusek of
Chicago, IL, Ardath Kusek of Burwell, NE, Evelyn Kusek of Ord, NE, and Gen Kusek
of Seward, NE.
Donald was preceded in death by his wife; daughter, Margaret Louise Glatter;
granddaughter, Mary Kaitlyn Glatter; sisters, Margaret Rader and Nancy Hittner;
brothers-in-law, Henry Kusek, Adrian Kusek, Floyd Kusek, Bernard Kusek, Andrew
Kusek and Dale Rader; sisters-in-law, Marie Suminski, Mildred Kusek, Sr.
Bonaventure Kusek, Sr. Lenore Kusek and Betty Kusek.
