WILLIAM R SLACK

 

William R. Slack died on Wednesday, April 12, 2017 at Hackensack University Hospital. He was 72.
Born in Newton, he lived in Sparta and San Jose, CA before returning to Byram three years ago.
Mr. Slack attained his Bachelor’s degree from San Jose State and his Master’s degree in Public Administration from the University of Southern California. He served in the Army National Guard during the Newark riots, having attended Officer Candidacy School in Ft. Dix, and attaining the rank of 2nd Lieutenant. Mr. Slack was a Deputy Sheriff with the Santa Clara County Sheriff’s Office in CA for 28 years, where he developed an inmate classification model for jails around the country. Some of his assignments also included warrants service, narcotics, and as Lieutenant, commander of the Sheriff's SWAT Team. He retired at the rank of Captain in 2000, and went on to work as the Executive VP of Security for Wells Fargo in CA, retiring in 2008.
He was a parishioner of St. Anthony’s Parish in San Jose, CA and Good Shepherd Church in Andover, where he also served as Eucharistic Minister and lector. He was also a member of the Knights of Columbus. He was a Little League Coach, a nationally ranked bowler, and an avid fisherman and golfer.
He was predeceased by his first wife of 42 years, Patricia Schultz, in 2013.
He is survived by his wife of two and a half years, Patricia (Cari); two sons: Steven (& Holly) Slack of San Jose, CA, and Scott (& Christine) Slack of Stockton, CA; two step-daughters: Kate (& Jonathan) Davis of Acworth, GA, and Michele (& Joseph) Egan of Hopatcong; and six grandchildren: Lucas, Garrett and Dylan Slack, Joshua and Candra Davis, and Estella Egan.
Funeral services will begin on Tuesday, April 18 at 9:00AM from the Morgan Funeral Home, 31 Main St, Netcong to a funeral Mass celebrated at Good Shepherd Church, Andover at 10:00AM. Interment will follow at Good Shepherd Cemetery. Visiting hours will be held on Monday, April 17 from 4:00-8:00PM at the funeral home.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to The Leukemia and Lymphoma Society (lls.org) or C.O.P.S. (Concerns of Police Survivors, www.nationalcops.org).
A memorial service in San Jose, CA is being planned.
