JOESPH M. ZECCA

Past Grand Knight

Joseph M. Zecca, age 70 of Wilmington, died peacefully surrounded by his loving family on December 31, 2015.

Joe was born in Wilmington, DE on April 6, 1945 to the late Adam and Viola (Ragazzo) Zecca. He grew up in Forty Acres and loved being one of the few Italians in an Irish neighborhood. He attended St. Anne's Catholic School as well as its Church, where he served as an altar boy. Joe moved to Claymont and attended Holy Rosary for 8th grade. He then completed two years at Archmere Academy before attending and graduating from Claymont High School in 1963. It was there that he met his soul mate and love of his life, Rose Hash.

Joe worked for the State Highway Department in the survey party, and then delivered for Wawa Dairy in the 1960's. He managed Northtown Liquors as well as University Plaza Liquor Store, forging many friendships. Joe later changed careers and worked in Human Resources for DRBA from 1989 until his retirement in 2007. Joe was a 50 year member of the Knights of Columbus and was Post Grand Knight of Christopher Council 3182. He was also an active member of Holy Rosary Church, having served on its Parish Council and also chairing its carnival in the 1980's. His true passion was his family and mountain home in Southwest Virginia where he loved sitting on the front porch and enjoying the view.

Joe is survived by his wife and best friend of 48 years, Rose; beloved daughter, Annette Zecca (Ron Williams, former husband); adored grandchildren, Catherine Rose Williams (Trey Steger) and Ronald Joseph Williams; first great-granddaughter, Lily Rose Steger who will be born in May; brother, Adam Zecca Jr. of CO; brother-in-law, Charles Hash Jr. of VA; aunt, Jeanette Caserta; many loving cousins and friends; and last but not least, the family rescue dogs, Winken, Miles, Lambchop, Jazzy, and Waffles. Joe fought his battle against cancer with courage and dignity. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather, and friend. He was the rock of his family, and their lives will never be the same. The family extends heartfelt gratitude to the staff of Christiana Hospital for their compassion and concern.
