CARL M VOGEL

 

Carl M. Vogel, age 61 years, of Jefferson City, Mo., passed away Thursday, April 14, 2016, at Barnes-Jewish Hospital surrounded by his loving family. Carl was born March 7, 1955, in Jefferson City to Carl F. and Rose Mary (Moerschel) Vogel. He was married December 8, 1979, to Kimberly L. Grice in Jefferson City. A lifelong resident of Jefferson City, Carl was a 1973 graduate of Helias High School and a 1978 graduate from the University of Missouri Columbia campus with a bachelor's degree in business administration.

Carl began full time employment in the family business, Jefferson City Coca-Cola Bottling Company, in 1978. He was proud to be the fourth generation family member to be employed by the company and he was named President in 1983. Currently fifth generation family members are employed by the company which was established in 1892 and began distributing Coca-Cola to central Missouri in 1905. He had been active with the Missouri Beverage Association as well as the national Coca-Cola Bottlers Association. The company recently named Carl's son, Jake, as President of the family owned business. Carl was a dedicated community volunteer and under his leadership Jefferson City Coca-Cola was committed to the goal of using their resources doing everything possible to make this community a better place to live. He will be remembered by the numerous fundraisers throughout central Missouri which Coca-Cola donated refreshments to help insure the charity minimize expenses so these events could be financially successful as possible. Carl currently served as a board member of Central Bank of Jefferson City. He also was serving as a board member of the American Red Cross Central and Northern Chapter. He served as a past board member for the YMCA and was currently serving on the YMCA board of trustees. He was a mentor at Lewis and Clark Middle School which he enjoyed immensely. Carl was a member and past board member of the Host Lions club and was recently named a Melvin Jones Fellow. The Host Lions assist the Buddy Pack program to pack meals to those children less fortunate and he always felt a sense of doing something meaningful with the other volunteers when returning home from a packing session. He was also a member of the Jefferson City West Rotary Club as well as a board member of the Great Rivers Council for the Boy Scouts. Carl was a member of the Eagles as well as the Knights of Columbus. He was also a longtime supporter of the American Legion and the VFW. He was an initial supporter of Operation Leaf Relief originating at Jefferson City High School that has now gained community wide support as Operation Bugle Boy honoring and saying "Thank You" to America's veterans each year. Carl was a past chairman of the Jefferson City Chamber of Commerce and received numerous awards and recognition which culminated with him receiving the Bill Quigg Distinguished Service award in 2010. He was a member of the charter class in 1990 of the Missouri Chamber of Commerce Leadership Program. He was a past chairman of the annual Helias Foundation fund drive and served as a board member of the foundation. He was a supporter of the Jefferson City public schools as both his children were students in our public schools where they received an excellent education. Carl served as a board member on both the St. Mary's Health Center and the St. Mary's Foundation. He was a past member of the Missouri Development Finance Board and served two terms as a commissioner for the Jefferson City Housing Authority. Carl served on advisory boards for Adult Basic Literacy Education (ABLE) and Jefferson City Crime Stoppers. In addition, he chaired the annual Salvation Army Bell Ringing campaign during the holiday season. He had been a long time supporter of the United Way and was a board member of the Cole County Chapter of Missouri Alumni Association. For Christmas one year Kim gave him his 1978 diploma from the University of Missouri, which he failed to receive due to campus parking tickets he failed to pay. The Missouri Jaycees recognized Carl with their statewide program as a member of the class of 1990 "Ten Outstanding Missourians". Carl transitioned from community service to public service in 1991, when he was elected to the Missouri House of Representatives in a district serving the residents of western Jefferson City and Cole County. He served in the House for twelve years then was elected to the Missouri Senate in 2002, in a district comprised of the five counties of Cole, Callaway, Miller, Morgan, and Moniteau. He was most happy when he was able to spend time in the district meeting people during campaigns and then as their Senator. During his 20 years in the Missouri General Assembly, he received numerous awards and recognition. He was committed to attend and had near perfect attendance to every Missouri National Guard soldier deployment and homecoming ceremony he was invited to participate out of his deep respect for the soldiers and their families for their sacrifices. Carl was Chairman of the Senate Ways and Means committee during his entire service in the Missouri Senate. He completed his elected public service in December of 2010. Carl spent many nights umpiring Parks and Recreation slow-pitch softball which led him to officiating high school football and basketball. He officiated college football for several years and was privileged to officiate the 1988 class 2A High School Football State Championship game at Busch Stadium in St. Louis.

Survivors include: his wife of 36 years, Kimberly Grice Vogel; son, Jacob Lloyd Vogel of Jefferson City; daughter, Kristen Rose Vogel of Brooklyn, New York; two sisters, Rose Mengwasser and her husband Alan and Edith Vogel, both of Jefferson City; brother-in-law, Marvin Talken of Taos; mother-in-law, Arden Grice; sister-in-law, Kris Simms and her husband Ian of Jefferson City; nephews, Lieutenant Commander Alan Mengwasser and his wife Rebecca, Matt Talken, John Mengwasser and his wife Vanessa, Anthony Mengwasser and his wife Claire, Paul Mengwasser and his wife Sarah, Steve Talken, and Patrick Mengwasser and his wife Kristen; niece, Erica Overfelt; and numerous great nieces and nephews. Carl and Kim's legacy is the pride they share with Jake's service to the United States Army with four overseas deployments and Kristen's volunteer service in Uganda for three years then returning to law school. His greatest regret is he will not see the weddings of his children and not be able to spoil his grandkids. He was preceded in death by his parents; sister, Emily Vogel Talken; and father-in-law, Lloyd Grice. The family would like to say thank you to the medical care givers from JCMG oncology and St. Mary's hospital for their care during Carl's illness.
