Robert Dennis Coy, retired Master Chief, Navy, 71, of Sykesville, died Wednesday, March 14, 2012, at home.

Born Jan. 11, 1941, in Mt. Vernon, Ohio, he was the son of the late Henry Robert Coy and Emma Alice Murray Coy Swickard. He was the husband of Wanda Joyce Smith Coy.

He retired as a Master Chief from the Navy and was a Vietnam War veteran. After his retirement from the Navy, he worked as a director of quality and quality engineer for various space and defense corporations.

He was a Corvette enthusiast. He was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Community in Eldersburg and a member of the Knights of Columbus, Council No. 7612. He was one of the founders of CORJUS, an organization that focused on educating lawmakers on the root causes of crime and in reintegrating ex-offenders into society. He visited individuals in the correctional system and worked actively to prevent repeat offenses through education, counseling and employment.

He was known for his sense of humor, ability to tell a good story and his avid interest in politics, world geography and all things technical.

Surviving, in addition to his wife, are sons and daughters-in-law Robert II and Dori Coy, of Mobile, Ala., and Daniel and Shalisse Coy, of Hampstead; daughters and sons-in-law Dottye and Todd Nichols, of Cary, N.C., Denise Coy, of Raleigh, N.C., and Debra and Kevin Garcia, of Haymarket, Va.; grandchildren Kelci, Elizabeth, Coleen, Anna, Sarah, Gabriel, Madalyn, and Piper.
