GEORGE F. ZWACK

 

George F. Zwack, age 83, of Owatonna, passed away unexpectedly July 9, 2016, at St. Mary's Hospital in Rochester.
Friends may greet the family from 4-7:00 PM Friday, July 15, 2016 at the Brick- Meger Funeral Home (1603 Austin Road) and one hour prior to the funeral mass at church. There will be a Knights of Columbus rosary recited at the funeral home at 7:00 PM. Funeral mass will be 10:30 AM Saturday, July 16 at St. Joseph Catholic Church, Owatonna. Military honors will be provided by the Steele County Funeral Unit. Interment at Sacred Heart Cemetery.
George was born February 27, 1933 in Georgetown, MN to parents Fedilius and Gertrude (Honadel) Zwack. His parents later moved to the Fargo area where he grew up and attended Shanley High School graduating in 1951. After high school he played hockey on a traveling team. In 1953 he was drafted into the United States army during the Korean War, and was honorably discharged in 1954. After the war he moved back to Fargo and attended the Interstate Business College. In 1956 he met and married Agilda Hlucny in Greenbush, MN. After a few various jobs George and his family settled in Rochester, MN where he started a career working for Firestone tire. In the mid 1960's George took a manager position at the Owatonna Firestone where he finally retired. In retirement he was very active in Knights of Columbus, especially with the local tootsie roll drive benefiting Special Olympics. He also served as the State Membership Director for the Knights of Columbus. George could be seen volunteering his time as a penalty box timekeeper for the Steele County Express hockey team. He was a member of the V.F.W.
George is survived by his wife, of 59 years, Agilda, one son, Michael (Michelle) Zwack, Merritt Island, FL, daughters, Melissa (Brad) Schumer, Scottsdale, AZ, Kristie (Jamie) Smith, Lake Mills, IA; 8 grandchildren and one great-grandchild; one sister, Delores Melon, Apple Valley, and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by, parents, and one sister, Barbara Short.
