DARRYLL W SOMMERS

Darryll W. Sommers

Darryll W. Sommers, 63, Hollidaysburg, died Monday, Sept. 21, 2015, at UPMC Altoona after an extended and courageous battle with pancreatic cancer.

He was born in Pittsburgh, son of Marie C. Sommers and the late Frank G. Sommers. He married his best friend, Susan Zutich, 43 years ago, and they had lived a very blessed life in Hollidaysburg since 1976.

Surviving are a daughter, Megan of Fairfax City, Va.; a son, Kevin of Hollidaysburg; and a brother, Robert of Pittsburgh.

He was preceded in death by an infant son, Brian Patrick.

Darryll came to Blair County as an assistant manager of the former Gee Bee Department Store in 1976. He was employed by Wolf Furniture for 25 years, working in stores in Altoona, Bedford, Bellefonte and Clearfield, including the Clearance Center in Altoona. His Wolf Furniture family has been among his most dedicated supporters in his battle with cancer, and the love and support they have given during this time cannot be measured.

He served in the U.S. Marine Corps in 1970, receiving an honorable medical discharge after an injury during boot camp. Having been a Boy Scout as a youth, attaining the prestigious rank of Eagle Scout and Silver Palm, he continued to serve as a Boy Scout troop leader in Hollidaysburg for many years.

Darryll was a member of the Knights of Columbus in Hollidaysburg, a member of the St. Mary's Choir, and a former member of St. Luke's Choir and Blair Concert Chorale. He was a former CCD instructor at St. Mary's and a religious instructor and vestry member of Holy Trinity Episcopal Church in Hollidaysburg and St. Luke's Episcopal Church in Altoona.

He was a sports fan, especially of his beloved Pittsburgh Pirates, Steelers and Penguins and Pitt Panthers. He also was an official for Three Rivers Track and Field Association and formerly an American Youth Soccer Organization coach. He was a man of great wit and humor, and all those who knew him enjoyed the twinkle in his eyes when he told a story. He was also an avid reader with a love of history, especially the Civil War era.

Darryll was, above all, an honorable man, committed to his wife, his family, his neighborhood, his community and his yellow lab, Jake. He could often be seen out in his Hollidaysburg neighborhood walking Jake. Home, family and community were Darryll's highest priorities, and he made a difference in so many lives, up until the very end of his.

Friends will be received from 10 until the 11:15 a.m. memorial service Sunday, Sept. 27, 2015, at The Good Funeral Home Inc., Alto-Reste Park Cemetery. Entombment will take place at Alto-Reste Park Cemetery.
