THOMAS J MATEA

 

Thomas John Matea, 63, of Broad Top Mountain Road, Saxton, PA, passed away on Saturday, May 3, 2014 at home. He was born on March 22, 1951 in Philipsburg, Pennsylvania; a son of Isabella Elaine (Youhon) Matea of Saxton formerly of Houtzdale and the late Thomas Paul Matea.

Along with his mother he is survived by the following family:
Daughters:
Eva Beth married to Robert Sichko, Saxton, PA
Becky Lee married to James Mainello, Saxton, PA

Grandchildren:
Celeste Snyder, Hunter Cassatt and Gabriel Thomas Sichko

He was preceded in death by two infant siblings.

Mr. Matea was a member of the Immaculate Conception Church, Dudley.

Tom was a graduate of Moshannon Valley High School Class of 1969 and a graduate of Lock Haven University receiving his bachelors of science in Mathematics Education and later receiving his masters degree through Pennsylvania State University.

He taught at the Tussey Mountain School District for thirty-four years until his retirement in 2007. Throughout his tenure as an educator he served as basketball, volleyball, football and softball coach, and a PIAA official for twenty-five years.

He was a member of the Knights of Columbus Star Sea Council, Hollidaysburg; Sons of American Legion, Six Mile Run; Broad Top Senior Center and Saxton Sportsman's Club.

Tom enjoyed hunting, fishing, reading, puzzles, playing cards and mostly spending time with his family.

Family and Friends may call on Tuesday, May 6, 2014 from 5-9 P.M. at the Akers Funeral Chapel, 715 Church Street, Saxton and on Wednesday, May 7, 2014 from 9:00 A.M. until the departure for the church. The Knights of Columbus will perform a wake service at 7:30 P.M. at the funeral chapel, Tuesday evening.

Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Wednesday, May 7, 2014 at 10:00 A.M. at the Immaculate Conception Church, Dudley with Father Anthony Petracca officiating.

Burial will be held privately in Houtzdale, Pennsylvania.

If friends so desire memorial contributions may be made in memory of Mr. Matea to the Immaculate Conception Church, Diabetes Association and the National Kidney Foundation.
