EUGENE W O'NEILL

 

Eugene W. O'Neill, 82, Garvey Manor Nursing Home, Hollidaysburg, formerly of Lakemont, died Tuesday at the manor after a brief illness.

He was born in Altoona, son of the late Walter and Margaret (Brady) O'Neill. He married Eileen J. Miller in 1954 at Holy Rosary Catholic Church.

Surviving are his wife of Lakemont; three sons: Terry O'Neill of Johnstown, Michael (Debra) O'Neill of Altoona and Kevin (Carol) O'Neill of Hollidaysburg; a daughter, Molly (Phillip) Scaglione of Ebensburg; six grandchildren: Dawn Landeck, Ryan, Bridget and Shawn O'Neill, and Phillip and Peter Scaglione; and three great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a sister, Bernadette Zeak.

He was a member of St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church, Lakemont.

Known as the "Smiling Irishman," he retired as owner/operator of O'Neill Real Estate and previously worked as an adjustor for G.M.A.C. Insurance Co. for 10 years.

Mr. O'Neill was a 1944 graduate of Altoona High School and 1950 graduate of Penn State University.

He was a veteran of WWII, enlisting in March 1945, and served with the Army Air Corps.

Mr. O'Neill was an avid tennis player.

Gene was an active member of many business and social organizations, including the Lakemont Lions; Jaycees; SCORE; TIP Club; Navy League; K of C Star of the Sea Council, Hollidaysburg; and TPA Club.

Friends will be received from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Friday at The Stevens Mortuary Inc., 1421 Eighth Ave., Altoona, where a vigil for the deceased will be held Friday (www.stevensmortuary.com). A funeral Mass will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 28, 2009, at St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church, Lakemont, by Father Mark Begly. Committal at Calvary Cemetery.
