JOHN J HAZENSTAB, SR.

 

John J. Hazenstab Sr., 84, Lakemont, died unexpectedly late Sunday evening, March 23, 2008, at Altoona Regional Health System, Altoona Hospital Campus emergency room.

He was born January 12, 1924, in East Freedom, son of the late Regis and Annie (Maher) Hazenstab. He married Kathleen Bender August 24, 1946, at St. Michael's Catholic Church, Hollidaysburg.

Surviving are his wife of 61 years; three daughters: Mary Jane Wyland and husband, Kenneth, of Pittsburgh, Judith Hiergeist and husband, William, and Karen Mielnik and husband, Mark, all of Altoona; three sons: Dennis P. and wife, Sheila of Shippensburg, John Jr. and wife, Karen, and Steven and wife, Debbi, all of Altoona; 11 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; a sister, Olene Singel of Hollidaysburg; and two brothers: Raymond of East Freedom and Robert of Duncansville. He was preceded in death by four brothers: Thomas, Patrick, Eugene and Roger.

He was a member of St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church, Lakemont.

Mr. Hazenstab retired from the Hollidaysburg Area School District maintenance department with 15 years of service, and prior to that, he retired from the Crane Co., Duncansville, with 24 years of service.

He was a 1943 graduate of Hollidaysburg Senior High School.

Mr. Hazenstab served as a staff sergeant with the U.S. Army in World War II and the Korean conflict.

He enjoyed hunting, fishing, woodworking and gardening.

Mr. Hazenstab was a past grand knight and charter member of Council 4245, Knights of Columbus, Hollidaysburg. He was a 4th degree knight, Bishop Garvey Assembly. He was a member of the Duncansville VFW.

Friends will be received from 2:00 to 4:00 and 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. Wednesday at Sorge Funeral Home, Hollidaysburg (www.sorgefuneralhome.com), where a vigil service will be held. A funeral Mass will be held at 11:30 a.m. Thursday at St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church, Lakemont, by Father Mark S. Begly. Committal at Alto Reste Park.
