CLARENCE (SAM) TAVERNER

 

C.I. "Sam" Taverner, 85, father of Tracy Ann Elm and Kevin Brewster Taverner, passed away at his home, September 11, 2013.
A Rosary will be held at 7:00 p.m. on Thursday in St. John Catholic Church. Funeral services for Sam will be held at 10:00 a.m., Friday, September 13, 2013 at St. John Catholic Church with Father Festus Maliwa officiating. Visitation will be Thursday, 1pm – 5pm at the Arnold Moore & Neekamp Funeral Home. Casket will not be open at the church. Committal prayers and interment will be in Bartlesville's Memorial Park Cemetery, under the direction of Arnold Moore & Neekamp Funeral Home.
Mr. Taverner was born November 29, 1927 in Johnson County, Arkansas to J.E. Taverner and Alta O. (Sears) Taverner. Shortly after his birth, the family moved to Wichita, Kansas. He received his education through high school in Wichita. At age 18, he enlisted in the Navy and served 2 years. Sam returned to Wichita and attended Kansas State University and received a degree in Civil Engineering. Sam met his future wife, Beverly Brewster, at KSU and they were married June 1, 1952, shortly after his graduation. They celebrated a 60th wedding anniversary shortly before Beverly's death on June 4, 2012. Tracy preceded her dad in death in 2009.
Sam was employed by Phillips Petroleum Co. from 1952 to 1988. He spent an additional year as a consultant to Phillips Petroleum's Supply & Transportation Dept. In 1992, Sam was hired as a consultant to the American Petroleum Institute and represented them on the Association of American Railroads' Tank Car Committee for 12 years. After that, he continued working on contract with the AAR Tank Car Committee, serving as an independent, third party assisting with the review of application for tank car construction, ensuring they were built in accordance with the Federal Department of Transportation's regulations and Association of American Railroads standards and regulations. Sam retired from that "part time" task on December 31, 2012.
Preceded him in death were his wife, Beverly; daughter, Tracy; brother, Jerry Taverner; brother-in-law, George Haywood and his son, Randy.
Sam is survived by his son, Kevin Taverner and his wife, Connie; sisters, Jean Haywood and Wanda Casey and her husband, Paul; brothers, Edmond Taverner, Don Taverner and his wife, Sherlene and Clyde Taverner and his wife, Pam; son-in-law, Kevin Elm; and sister-in-law, Betty Taverner. Also surviving are grandchildren, Katy and Bryan Elm, Christina, Taylor and Garrett Taverner and great-grandson, Jacob Murphy.
