LARRY A. SHARKEY

 

LAWRENCE ARTHUR SHARKEY, "Larry", 65, passed away on Mar. 26, 2015 of cancer. Lawrence A. Sharkey was born February 3, 1950, into a family of 13 children. He was a twin to Gerry Sharkey - the first of three sets. Larry attended Bishop Lillis High School. After high school, Larry enlisted into the Army, and was placed in the Armory division. After basic training he was sent to Vietnam where he spent 11 months, located in the DMZ, near Quan Tri. Larry was placed in charge of his platoon. During a fire fight, while assisting a badly wounded gunner, Larry himself sustained shrapnel wounds. He was air lifted out and shipped to Japan for medical attention to his wounds, and then came home. By his distinguished actions on September 24, 1969, he was awarded a Silver Star by the Department of the Army. Among other medals earned were the National Defense Service medal; Sharpshooter; 2 Overseas Service Bars; Vietnam Service Medal with 2 Bronze Stars: and, Vietnam Campaign Medal. He was discharged in August, 1974. Larry passed away on Mar. 26, 2015 of cancer. Larry was laid to rest, in the memorial wall with a Military burial, June 27, 2016, at Ft Leavenworth National VA cemetery. He was a member of The Knights of Columbus, Council 4962.
