23 May, 1954 - 9 September, 2025
Stephen "Steve" Robert Prout's long journey with cancer has come to an end. He is now resting in the arms of the Lord. He was a devoted husband, father and friend whose kindness, strength and love touched everyone who knew him. He will be deeply missed.
He was born in 1954, the 2nd of 6 children, and lived in the Boston suburbs until he graduated from Hull High School and entered the United States Navy as a radioman.
After serving our country, Steve attended UMass Boston where he earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in English. During his work career he worked in various leadership positions directing the sales and service operations for various telecommunications voice and data organizations most notably Sprint Communications and Quest Corporation. Prior to these organizations, Steve worked at GCC Corp where, as he always said, he made his most notable achievement meeting and marrying his wife of 41 years, Annette. After moving many times (sorry family) and making lots of great friends, he retired to Southport, North Carolina where he had many hobbies and volunteered for numerous organizations. He delighted in having the grandkids visit this coastal town.
Steve was an eager volunteer at Sacred Heart serving on the parish council, the choir, and as an altar server. He was also the chairperson of the annual diocesan fundraiser called the Bishop's Annual Appeal. Steve was very proud to be a member of the Knights of Columbus where he held many positions including Grand Knight. He always called Sacred Heart the best parish he had ever attended. He also took great pride in his 10 years of service to Rivermist's POA where he served in all the officer positions, including president and assisted on several committees. For many years he played guitar and sang at several area nursing homes. He was a band member and singer at the Amuzu theater in Southport for several years taking pleasure in his time in the shows and with his musician friends.
He was predeceased by his parents, William and May; our son, Michael; siblings, William, Robert, Kathleen and Susan; and brother in law, James Haley.
Steve is survived by his lovely and dedicated wife, Annette, sons Keith, John (wife Kayla); brother, Danny (wife Ringgey); brothers in law, John (wife Kathy) and Robert (wife Christine); sister-in-law, Julia; granddaughters, Brooklynn and Zooey; many nieces and nephews, cousins, and great nieces and nephews.
The Funeral Mass will be held at Sacred Heart Catholic Church on Monday, September 15, 2025 at 11:00 am, followed by an internment with a reception to follow in the Church Social Hall.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Catholic Charities of the Diocese of Raleigh or Lower Cape Fear LifeCare (Hospice).
