COUNCIL #1382 - KNIGHTS OF COLUMBUS CARLYLE REMEMBERS
JAMES M ETTER

James "Jim" Etter, age 84, of Carlyle, passed away peacefully on February 18, 2025, in Carlyle, IL. Born on January 3, 1941, in Breese, IL, Jim was the son of the late Henry J. and Leona A. (née Kueper) Etter.

Jim’s life was defined by love, family, and faith. On February 2, 1963, he married Judy K. (Bright) Etter, with whom he shared 31 wonderful years until her passing on February 26, 1994. He later found companionship with Shirley (Newkirk) Etter, until her passing on September 14, 2003. Love graced Jim’s life once again when he married Mary Ellen (Isaak) Etter on July 15, 2006. Mary Ellen survives him, holding dear the years they spent together.

Jim was a devoted father to Craig Etter (Penny) of Albers; DeAnn Imming (David) of St. Charles, MO; and Brad Etter (Barb) of Woodstock, GA. He is also survived by his step-son, Michael Isaak of Huey. Jim’s legacy continues through his beloved grandchildren: Casey Thole (Patrick), Adam Etter (Alycia), Rachel Seppelt (Blake), Kaylee Imming (fiancé Alec Roussin), Riley Etter, Jaxon Etter (fiancé Julia Raabe), Mason Etter, Colton Etter, and Jensen Etter. He felt especially blessed to witness the joy of his great-grandchildren: Hudson and Maddox Thole and Ensley Etter. Jim also leaves behind his brother, Jack Etter (Mary Alice) of Carlyle.

He now joins his late son and daughter-in-law, Kent and Christine Etter, and his sister, Ruth Heyer, in eternal rest.

Jim’s professional journey reflected his strong work ethic and dedication. He began his career in the fields as a farmer, later honed his craftsmanship as a carpenter, and eventually retired as a respected petroleum salesman. Beyond his work, Jim was deeply committed to his community. A proud and active member of the Carlyle Knights of Columbus, Council 1382, he served as Past Grand Knight and led the Columbian Club as a past president. His faith remained central throughout his life as a lifelong member of St. Mary's Church. Jim was also a loyal supporter of Mater Dei High School, participating actively in the Fathers and Friends organization.

Jim had a lifelong passion for basketball, especially when watching his children and grandchildren excel on the court—moments that brought him immense pride and joy.

Family and friends are invited to celebrate Jim’s life during visitation at Zieren Funeral Home, 1111 Clinton Street, Carlyle, IL, on Sunday, February 23, from 4:00–7:00 PM, and again on Monday, February 24, from 8:00–9:30 AM. A Funeral Mass of Christian Burial will follow at 10:00 AM at St. Mary’s Church in Carlyle, with Fr. George Mauck officiating. Interment will take place at St. Mary’s Cemetery.

Jim Etter’s legacy of love, faith, and community devotion will continue to live on in the hearts of all who knew and loved him.

Expressions of sympathy in memory of Mr. Etter are suggested to Mater Dei High School and will be received through Zieren Funeral Home.
