Donald Meyer passed away peacefully on the morning of Saturday, January 11, 2025, surrounded by love.
Don's warm and endearing personality had a way of drawing people to him throughout every chapter of his life. He was known for his love of music, dancing with his beloved wife, Eileen, and his ability to brighten any day with a smile - whether greeting a friend, a neighbor, or even a stranger. Deeply cherished by many, Don's kindness, humor, and love will be profoundly missed by all who had the privilege of knowing him.
Don was born and raised in the Washington Heights neighborhood of New York City. He attended St. Elizabeth's Grade School, Cardinal Hayes High School, and Pace University. As a young man, he joined the National Army Corps of Engineers. He enjoyed hunting, boating, and spending time at the Fairview Tavern with friends.
In November 1966, Don married Eileen, the love of his life. Together they built a family and welcomed their two children: Ann in 1967 and Scott in 1968. Don began his career at Coca-Cola in Atlanta, but shortly after the family returned to the Northeast, settling in Waldwick, NJ in 1972. There, Don became a cherished member of the community, actively participating in local schools, church activities, and the Knights of Columbus. He developed countless friendships, sharing laughter and camaraderie over weekends and events.
Don spent 25 years working for Citibank in Manhattan, where he rose to the role of Vice President of the pension funds investment team. In addition to his corporate career, Don co-owned Gil's Bar, a popular gathering place in town, which became a cornerstone of community life. After retiring in 1995, Don and Eileen relocated to St. James Plantation in Southport, NC, where they embraced a vibrant, new chapter.
In their beloved Lagoon Court community, Don and Eileen built lifelong friendships and became devoted members of Sacred Heart Church. Don took pride in founding a Knights of Columbus chapter with friends, which continues to support and serve the St. James and Southport communities to this day.
Don is survived by is daughter, Ann Wilton (Meyer), and her husband Boyd, of Raleigh, NC; son, Scott Meyer, and his wife, Jennifer, of West Chester, PA; and six adoring grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife, Eileen.
