Anthony “Tony†Hegler, 83, was born Jan. 26, 1941, and went to be with the Lord on Nov. 23, 2024. He was born in Pueblo to Antone and Mary (Dernovshek) Hegler. Tony attended Central High School, where he played basketball and baseball on the varsity teams for three seasons. He was named to the North-South basketball all-star game in 1959. He played basketball at the University of Colorado before returning to Pueblo where he played basketball and baseball for Pueblo Junior College. Tony played with the basketball teams that won the National Championship in 1961, and also played in the National Junior College Baseball World Series. He finished his collegiate athletic career at Colorado State University-Fort Collins with the baseball team on first base. In 2013, Tony was inducted into the Greater Pueblo Sports Association Hall of Fame, and later into the Colorado State University-Pueblo Hall of Fame. He graduated from CSU with business and accounting degrees and worked for General Motors for several years before working for Minnequa Bank. With a new venture in mind, Tony left for Las Vegas in 1971, starting work at the El Cortez for Jackie Gaughn, then later opening the Royal Inn Casino as their general manager for owner, Michael Gaughn. Several years later, Michael built the Barbary Coast Casino with Tony as his chief financial officer-controller. He went on to help Michael with the opening of the Gold Coast, Sun Coast and South Point Casinos. After over 30 years of service, Tony retired and decided to return to Pueblo. With a slower pace, he enjoyed time with his Pueblo buddies: breakfasts, lunches and continuing his love for sports and events with Colorado State University-Pueblo. Tony will be remembered by all of his cousins and many friends; his furry pals, Yankee, Murphy and Bella; along with caregiver, Carole. Special thanks to Dr. Stephen Vialpando and Debbie for their endearing care. Thanks also to Gary Ventrees for his selfless time in helping ensure Tony met all of his schedules. Thank you, Tony Spicola-brother- for over 50 years of caring and friendship. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held 11 a.m. Tuesday, Dec. 10, 2024, at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Blende.
