Herbert "Herb" Pingsterhaus passed away on December 25th, 2024, in Carlyle, IL. Born on July 6, 1938, in Germantown, IL, Herb's longevity and goodwill left a lasting imprint on the hearts of those he touched throughout his 86 years.
Herb's life was one marked by steadfast dedication, unwavering work ethic, and a compassionate spirit. His journey in the workforce began at a local shoe factory and on the railroad before honorably serving his country in the Army Reserves. Upon returning to civilian life, Herb's professional path led him to General Motors and Hunter Packing Co, the Schuette Grocery Store, and then onto a role as a gas distributor for a decade. His diligent work continued for 16 years with the highway department, where he no doubt left his mark on the infrastructure in and around Carlyle.
Public service was a cornerstone of Herb's character, as demonstrated by his active association involvement. He was a dedicated member of the Carlyle Knights of Columbus, Council 1382, where he not only served membership roles but also led as a past Grand Knight. His leadership extended to the Columbian Club, where he held the position of President. A figurehead in local politics, Herb was the Clinton County Republican Committee Chairman for 16 years and served as a committeeman for an impressive 32 years. Herb served on the Clinton County Board for a decade, dedicating two of those years as chairman, and served on the Carlyle City Council for two years. A veteran and community servant, Herb was a member of the Beckemeyer American Legion, a former volunteer fireman, and dedicated several years as a Carlyle Fire Department trustee.
Herb's committed servitude within his community mirrored the love and devotion he showed to his beloved family. He is survived by his adoring wife of 63 years, Jo Ann “Jodi†(Kapp) Pingsterhaus, whom he married on October 14, 1961, in Carlyle, IL; his devoted daughters Lori Beckmann and husband Rudi, Stacy Burton and husband Mark; his proud grandchildren Taylor Beckmann and wife Kristine, Connor Beckmann and wife Abby, and Mara Burton; great-grandchildren Meyer Beckmann and Reece Beckmann, and Herb was eagerly anticipating the arrival of another great grandchild in January; step-grandchildren including Justin Burton and wife Stephanie, Blake Burton, and Kyleigh Burton and fiancé Alex Huels; step-great-grandchildren Addison Boyle and Kayden Burton; his caring sister Ruth Spihlmann and husband Paul; his brothers Norb Pingsterhaus and wife Alice, and Glennon Pingsterhaus; as well as in-laws Ruth Pingsterhaus, Kay Pingsterhaus, and Harry Kapp. He also leaves behind many nieces, nephews, and cousins who will miss him dearly.
Herb was preceded in passing by his caring parents, Bernard and Sophia (Langenhorst) Pingsterhaus; parents-in-law Harold and Velma Kapp; his brothers Dave and Paul Pingsterhaus; sister Betty Haselhorst and her husband Herb, and sister-in-law Pat Pingsterhaus.
A devout member of St. Mary's Church, Herb lived his faith through action. He was an avid supporter of his grandchildren's sporting endeavors, rarely missing a game or match. His passion extended to the fairways, as he enjoyed playing golf, and to the stands of sporting events, cheering for the St. Louis Cardinals, St. Louis Blues, and college basketball games with fervent spirit. Herb and Jodi's love of travel led them on an enriching life journey, visiting all 50 states and creating memories that Jodi and their family will treasure forever.
Private services will be held for Mr. Pingsterhaus, with burial at St. Mary’s Cemetery in Carlyle. Expressions of sympathy in memory of Herb are suggested to Carlyle High School Athletics, Mater Dei High School Athletics, or to the American Heart Association.
