Michael "Mick" O'Meara, age 91, of Onaway, died at home on Wednesday January 28, 2015. The son of Michael Patrick and Elizabeth (Robert) O'Meara, Mick was born on September 22, 1923, was raised in Onaway, and graduated from Onaway High School. After graduation, Mick moved to Detroit where he met the love of his life, Patricia Elaine Woodhams. They were married on September 23, 1944 in Detroit and moved to Onaway where they raised their family.
Retiring in 1985, Mick made his career at Presque Isle Electric where he was the general manager for many years. Having a strong Catholic faith, he was a longtime member of St. Paul Catholic Church and Knights of Columbus. Mick, not only was active in his church, but in the community as well. He served as the mayor of Onaway for several years and was on the Onaway School board. He was one of the founding members of the Onaway Community Federal Credit Union and served on the board of directors.
Mick enjoyed flower gardening and working in his woodshop. He was quite particular and meticulous when it came to the projects he was working on, especially his wood work. He enjoyed bird hunting and had a special fondness for dachshunds named Fritz, having many of them through the years. An avid Onaway Cardinals fan, Mick enjoyed watching all high school sports. He followed his children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren as they competed in football, baseball, softball, basketball, volleyball, and wrestling. For three generations, Mick O'Meara has been sitting in the stands, rarely missing a game, and supporting the Onaway Cardinals.
Surviving Mick are his two sons, Mike O'Meara (Fran Chagnon) of Onaway and Brian (Debbie) O'Meara of Millersburg; three daughters, Pam (Dale) Willey and Barbara (Todd) Willey, both of Onaway, and Mary (Matt) Harley of Ortonville; 14 grandchildren; 25 great grandchildren; as well as his dearly-loved dachshund, Fritz. Mick was preceded in death by his wife, Patricia; son, Kevin; and two half sisters, Kate and Pauline.
