Retired U.S. Naval Reserve Capt. Joseph Martin Popp, 74, died Nov. 15, 2009, at Sentara Norfolk General Hospital. Born June 4, 1935 in the Bronx Burough of New York City, he was the son of the late Joseph Francis and Margaret Golden Popp. He was a graduate of Fordham Preparatory, New York City and received a bachelor's degree in electrical engineering from the University of Miami. An active parishioner of The Catholic Church of the Ascension, Joseph was a eucharistic minister and was a fourth degree Knight of Columbus, Mother Theresa of Calcutta Council No. 12117. His career in the Navy was marked by a distinguished record of more than 36 years of achievement and accomplishment. After graduating OCS in 1958 and serving three years active duty, he joined the Naval Reserve Intelligence Program. His civil service career began as an electronics engineer with the Bureau of Ships, Electronics Maintenance Engineering Center and concluded with the position as department head in the Fleet Communications department, NISE East, Portsmouth. Surviving are his wife, Lucy B. Popp; his children and their spouses, Brian and Amy Popp, Toni Popp Alger and Todd, Eric and Drenda Popp, all of Virginia Beach, Teri Popp Jewell and Andy of Hillsboro, Ore.; his grandchildren, Andrew, Matthew, Grace, Rachel, Tyler, Rebecca, Amelia, Ryan, Garrett and Ella. A memorial Mass will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, Nov. 20, at The Catholic Church of the Ascension with Father James E. Parke as celebrant.
