JOSEPH A. ANDERSON II of Virginia Beach, Virginia, passed away unexpectedly March 26, 2023, at Sentara Heart Hospital. He is survived by his wife of 35 years, Kathleen (Johnson) Anderson and his two daughters Elyse and Jaime Anderson, who he cherished dearly. Also survived by his three brothers, John Anderson (Pam), Tom Anderson (Ellen) and Ray Anderson (Sheri).
Born August 1, 1963, in Portsmouth, Va., Joe was the third son of the late Tressa and Joseph Anderson. Joe graduated in 1981 from Deep Creek High School in Chesapeake, Va. where he played trumpet and French horn in the school band. He began his collegiate studies at Shenandoah College and Conservatory of Music and was a member of Phi Mu Alpha Symphonia fraternity. He graduated from Old Dominion University with a Bachelor of Arts in Music Composition (1987). Continuing his studies, he received a second bachelor’s degree in Management Information Systems from Old Dominion University (1997) and a Masters of Information Technology from Virginia Tech University (2018). Joe excelled in the software engineering profession with more than 20 years of management experience that included an in-depth knowledge of the healthcare industry. In 1995, Joe began his career as a software programmer with Abacus (Virginia Beach, Va). In 2000 he joined Amerigroup Corporation (Virginia Beach, Va) where he served as the Director of Application Management. During the following four years at Anthem, Inc. (Norfolk, Va), Joe was the Director of Claims Adjudication Automation Applications. From 2017-2022, he worked for NTT DATA Services (Reston, Va) as a System Integration Sr. Specialist Advisor. In September, 2022, Joe became a Principal Consultant for Legerity LLC (Norfolk, Va) where his team oversaw the claims platform migration for Sentara/Optima Health.
Young at heart, Joe’s spirituality, compassion and sense of humor will be cherished by the youth he connected with in his volunteer work at Church of the Ascension and Project Children. Joe was an aspirational nature enthusiast nurturing his backyard menagerie of critters and birds.
He will be remembered by those who loved him for his calm demeanor, quiet humor and pun-filled wit. Joe had a unique power of insight and thoughtful observation shown through his genuine respect for others. His enthusiastic passion for music inspired many by the joy it brought to our daily lives.
Most of all, Joe loved deeply-if he was in your life, you knew this.

A Funeral Mass will be held on Saturday, April 15, 2023 at 2 pm at the Church of the Ascension, 4853 Princess Anne Rd, VA Beach, VA 23462. The family will greet visitors at 1:30.
