R. Henry Spalding passed away peacefully at Baptist Health surrounded by his family on Thursday, September 21, 2023. Henry was born on July 28, 1933, in Marion County, KY, he was 90 years old. Henry was an Army veteran and a retired Insurance Agent from which he built a successful agency with Nationwide Insurance beginning in 1968. Henry was named a manager in the Revenue Cabinet by Gov. Bert Combs in 1960 and remained in that position until 1968. Henry was the longest-serving constitutional officer in the history of the Commonwealth, serving more than 23 years as the 2nd District Railroad Commissioner from 1977 to 2000 where he worked to reduce railroad-related fatalities. He contributed to starting the Marion County Junior Miss Scholarship Program. Henry was a member of the Knights of Columbus, and St. Margaret Mary Catholic Church. He was preceded in death by his parents, Joseph Adrian and Cordie Luckett Spalding; four brothers, Raphael, Donnie, Lambert and Terry Spalding; son, Jeff Spalding and son in law, Kevin Thomas. Left to cherish his memory are his wife of 64 years, Virginia Spalding; two daughters, Lisa Sherman and Marsha Thomas; three granddaughters, Stephanie Veeneman (Marc), Jennifer Holbert (Shawn) and Emily Nalley (Alex); nine great grandchildren, Brayden, Mason & Logan Veeneman, Caleb Mintun, Kruz, Mariah, Jett & Lilly Holbert and Lauren Nalley; many cousins, nieces, nephews and dedicated compassionate caregiver Patsy. Visitation will be held 3:00 to 8:00 pm, Monday, September 25, 2023, at Ratterman Brothers Funeral Home, 12900 Shelbyville Road, East Louisville. Funeral mass will be at 10:30 am on Tuesday, September 26, 2023, at St. Margaret Mary Catholic Church, 7813 Shelbyville Rd, Louisville with burial to follow at 1 pm at St. Augustine’s Cemetery in Lebanon, KY where military rites will be conducted by the Marion County Veterans Honor Guard. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to St. Mary’s Center or Hosparus of Louisville. Pallbearers are Rafe Spalding, Joe Donnie Spalding, Doug Spalding, Mike Spalding, Joe Luckett & Jim Luckett. Arrangement are entrusted to Mattingly Funeral Home.
