DONALD F HARRINGTON

 

Donald F. Harrington, 82, Hollidaysburg, passed away peacefully Monday after an extended illness. He was born in Gallitzin, son of the late Roger J. Harrington and Dorothy L. (Galligan) Harrington-Werner.
Donald married Virginia Samreta on Aug. 19, 1967, at St. Hyacinth Church in Fort Wayne, Ind.
Surviving are his loving wife, Ginny, of 55 years; his children, Scott (Sherry) Harrington of Bellefonte, Mark (Keri) Harrington of Altoona and Amy (Todd) Banks of Hollidaysburg. He will be remembered as "Pap" by his seven grandchildren: Brooke Harrington, Drew Banks, Amelia Harrington, Ashlyn Harrington, Mark "MJ" Harrington Jr., Josh Banks and Allie Banks; brothers, David (Karen) Harrington of Charlotte, N.C., and Clifford (Patrice) Werner
of Lafayette Hills, Pa.; brother-in-law, William Beard of Altoona; a special niece, Karen DeStefano and special cousin, Anita Terchanik, both of Hollidaysburg; and many loving family members.
Preceding him in death were his sister, Sharon (Harrington) Beard; and a sister-in-law, Deborah (Boyd) Harrington.
Donald was a 1958 graduate of Altoona Catholic High School and served in the U.S. Navy from 1958-62.
He worked in sales with several large companies, including Savinelli Pipes and RDO Marketing, a sporting goods distributor. He was also owner of The Tobacconist Shops in Altoona.
Donald was happiest watching his grandchildren in their sporting events and extra-curricular activities. He enjoyed coaching football and basketball through the years, beginning at St. Justin High School in Pittsburgh; at St. Elizabeth High School in Wilmington, Del.; Hollidaysburg Catholic School; and at Hollidaysburg Junior High School, where he was affectionately known as "Coach Pappy." He was a PIAA football referee for several years. Donald was an avid fan of local sports and athletes, and he supported them regularly. His interests included NASCAR racing, winters spent in Sebring, Fla., Alaskan vacations, hunting and fishing.
Friends and family will be received from 4 to 8 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 26, 2023, at The Stevens Mortuary Inc., 1421 Eighth Ave., Altoona, where a vigil for the deceased will be held.
A funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Friday, Jan. 27, 2023, at St. Michael the Archangel Catholic Church, 301 Spruce St., Hollidaysburg. Committal will be held at Calvary Cemetery with Military Honors.
