Joseph "Joe" Schaefer Steigelman, 79, died peacefully at home on August 9, 2022, after a year-long battle with cancer.
Joe was born on March 25, 1943, in Greenville, Ms., to the late Thomas F. Steigelman and Ethelmae Schaefer Steigelman. He was preceded in death by his brother, Thomas F. Steigelman, Jr. and his twin granddaughters, Ella and Grace Lewis.
Joe attended Mount Saint Joseph High School in Baltimore, Md. In 1962 Joe started working at Newport News Shipbuilding and Dry Dock Company. In 1979 he accepted a position at TVA to further his career in the nuclear field. After 25 years, Joe retired from TVA. He was active in the Knights of Columbus for 47 years holding many positions. Joe volunteered his time with the St. Jude Council of the Knights preparing monthly Sunday morning breakfasts, Lenten fish fries, Breakfast with Santa and many other activities.
Joe is survived by his wife of 56 years, Helen; children, Joseph, Jr. (Michelle Lewis), Matthew (Amber), Amy Lewis (Patrick), Katie Monahan (Chris) and six grandchildren: Giselle and August Steigelman, Sophia and Anna Claire Lewis, Finn and Cameron Monahan.
Funeral services will be on Saturday, Sept. 3, at 1 p.m. at St. Jude Catholic Church, 930 Ashland Terrace, Chattanooga. Family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the church. Interment will be at the St. Jude Columbarium immediately after the service.
