Funeral is Friday
A funeral for Harry Elsworth “Hank” Mergenthal, 75, of Falmouth will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday at St. Mary’s Catholic Church. The Rev. Christopher M. Buckner will officiate, and burial will be in Sunset Memorial Gardens.
Pallbearers will be James M. Rule, Sydnor Billingsley, Raymond Dameron Sr., John Sybyl, John Druiett, George Lewis, James Burton and Elza Monroe.
The family will receive friends from 7 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Mullins & Thompson Funeral Service, Fredericksburg Chapel, with a wake service to begin at 8 p.m.
Mr. Mergenthal died Tuesday, June 3, at St. Mary’s Hospital in Richmond.
Born in Bellevue, Ky., he was the former owner and operator of Allied Bookkeeping Services and former owner and operator of Chatham Coin Laundry.
He was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church, was a graduate of Southeastern University in Washington and was a member of the Elks Lodge No. 875 in Fredericksburg. He was also a charter member of the Knights of Columbus No. 4034 in Fredericksburg, was a member of the American Legion Post No. 290 and was a former member and treasurer of the Kenmore Foundation.
He was a World War II Navy veteran.
Survivors include his wife, Rose Stefaniga Mergenthal; two sons, Ken Mergenthal of Ladysmith and David Mergenthal of Fredericksburg; two daughters, Dianne Lewis of Chesterfield and Jane Simonpietri of Fredericksburg; a brother, Arthur Mergenthal of Bellevue, Ky.; and seven grandchildren.
The family requests that expressions of sympathy take the form of contributions to the Building Fund of Holy Cross Academy, c/o St. Mary’s Catholic Church, 1009 Stafford Ave., Fredericksburg, Va. 22401; or to Mountain View Rescue Squad, 1268 Mountain View Road, Falmouth, Va. 22406.
