GLENN E SHERMAN

 

Glenn E. Sherman, 86, civil engineer and retired executive, died peacefully under hospice care Thursday, July 18, 2013, in Toledo, Ohio.
Mr. Sherman was the executive vice president of the France Stone Co., a subsidiary of General Crushed Stone Co., a subsidiary of Hanson. Prior to moving to Toledo, he was Virginia area manager for General Crushed Stone Co. in Fredericksburg and was president of the Buffalo Slag Co., Buffalo, N.Y. Glenn also served as president of the National Slag Association.
Glenn was born in Buffalo, N.Y., and was a graduate of Canisius High School. He served in the V-5 Navy Flight Preparatory School, studying to become a Navy pilot, while at Dartmouth University and Colgate University. He earned an engineering degree at the University of Detroit.
He was a proud member of the Rotary Club of Toledo, the American Legion and the International Yachting Fellowship of Rotarians, serving in many capacities in each organization.
While living in Buffalo, Mr. Sherman was active in the Catholic community. He served as the corporate gifts chairman of Catholic Charities of Buffalo, as a member of St. Amelia's Parish Council and Holy Name Society, Town of Tonawanda. He had 62 years of service as a fourth degree member of the Knights of Columbus. Additionally, Mr. Sherman was an active member of the Town of Tonawanda Planning Board.
He was a wonderful husband and father, raising five children on his own. He is survived by his wife of 27 years, Betty Liddle Sherman; and his children, Barbara Cutrona (Steve) of Rochester, N.Y., Paul Sherman (Valerie) of Fredericksburg, Diane Sherman (Paul Berrios) of Honolulu, MaryEllen Dolan (Matt) of Bethesda, Md., and Tom Sherman (Susan) of Fredericksburg; sister Jean Sherman of Orchard Park, N.Y.; stepchildren William Dyer Liddle III of Stuart, Fla., Spencer Liddle of Charlottesville and Margaret Upton (Mark) of Richmond; and 15 grandchildren.
He was predeceased by wife Jean McTigue Sherman; sister Ellen Sherman; and grandson Alex Sherman. Memorial services will be held in Toledo, Ohio, and Buffalo, N.Y.
