WILLIAM R NOVITSKY

 

William Raymond Novitsky, 73, of Fredericksburg died Tuesday, April 23, 2013, at Mary Washington Hospital.

He was a member of St. Mary Catholic Church and served as a Eucharistic minister.

William was born in Syracuse, N.Y., and was raised in a rural area near Scranton, Pa. He graduated from Pennsylvania State University as a mechanical engineer. He worked extensively in the aerospace industry, serving as a reliability engineer on the Apollo lunar landing program, numerous Naval Air Systems Command weapons programs and on several classified NASA space satellite programs.

He retired from Lockheed Martin Co. in September 1994 and moved to the Fredericksburg area in 1995. He worked locally at Fredericksburg Hardware, GEICO and Baker's Appliance repair shop until his final retirement in the year 2000.

William was an active member of the Knights of Columbus after he joined in August 1979, serving as Grand Knight for three different councils in Virginia and Pennsylvania and as a former district deputy in Virginia. He also was the financial secretary of Fredericksburg Council 4034 for nine years. William also actively participated as a member of the Lions Club while residing in Downingtown, Pa., and served as president for two different clubs.

William is survived by his wife, Mernia Novitsky; two daughters, Kathryn Driggers of Montclair and Julia Griffin and her husband, Lindsey, of Fredericksburg; and one son, William Novitsky and his wife, Lisa, of Woodbridge. He is also survived by two brothers, David Novitsky of Philadelphia and Thomas Novitsky of Scranton; and six grandchildren, Kyle, Emily, Shaw, Virginia, Caroline and Sophie.


A rosary service will be held at 3 p.m. Sunday, April 28, at Covenant Funeral Service, Fredericksburg, with visitation following until 5 p.m.

A Mass of celebration will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, April 29, at St. Mary Catholic Church. Inurnment will be private.
