Pietro Pete DiMaio, 66, of Fredericksburg passed away peacefully surrounded by his wife and children full of love for him on Thursday, August 31st, 2017. Over the last year, he had struggled with heart failure. Pete remained strong, courageous, and optimistic during his entire journey.
Pete was born in Italy on June 23, 1951. He and his family have made their home in Fredericksburg, Virginia since 1980. Pete worked in commercial construction for over 40 years. He enjoyed his job and took pride in his work. Pete was very fond of the company he worked for and his great team of co-workers.
Pete and his wife Peggy owned an old world styled gift store in historic downtown Fredericksburg for 15 years. Pete enjoyed sharing his Italian heritage with the many wonderful people who visited him in the store. Pete enjoyed the wonder of the night sky, the ocean and nature. He always appreciated a new moon, the changing tides, birds and wildlife. He most enjoyed spending time fishing with his family off the Outer Banks Fishing Pier in Nags Head, North Carolina and devotedly followed his favorite sports teams, the Washington Nationals baseball team and Washington Redskins football team.
Pete was a member of the St. Mary's Catholic Church in Fredericksburg, and also a member of the Knights of Columbus. He enjoyed bowling with the Knights of Columbus teams for many years.
Pete enjoyed being a husband, father, and Pop Pop to his eight grandchildren. He was very proud of his family and is survived by his wife of 43 wonderful years, Peggy; three children, Giannina (husband Rob), MaryAnn (husband Grant), and Tony (wife Lindy); and 8 grandchildren, Miranda, Christian, Amelia, Danika, Caroline, Daxton, DreeAnna, and Asher.
Pete is also survived by his siblings Maria, Gelsomina, and Salvatore, in Italy, and his dear brother Giovanni in Seychelles. He is predeceased by his younger brother Fiorenzo who died several years earlier. Pete leaves behind many Italian cousins, nieces, and nephews in his hometown in Italy.
As Pete requested, a private family service to celebrate his life and place a permanent memorial will be held in Nags Head, North Carolina. It was his hope that his family would return there often to cherish his memory and remain close.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to The Doorways, a hospitality hotel for people receiving treatment at VCU hospital or those with relatives in the hospital.
