ROBERT KLEID

 

Robert (“Bob”) J. Kleid, 79, of Oak Island passed away on Tuesday, November 8, 2011, at his home.

Mr. Kleid was born in Brooklyn, New York, to Robert F. and Hazel Smith Kleid. After serving four years in the U.S. Navy during the Korean War, he attended the Institute of Design & Construction and became a New York State Registered Architect. He retired as a partner from The Eggers Group Architect & Planners of New York City.

Among his work as project architect was the Phase 1 and 2 replacement buildings at the Nassau Community College Campus and the South Street Seaport project in Lower Manhattan.

In North Carolina, some of his pro bono work included assisting in the design and construction of the original St. James Fire Department and Town Hall building.

In 1998, he was appointed chairman of the Sacred Heart Catholic Church Planning and Building Committee for the new church under Father Doug Lawson. He provided the building program and assisted in the design of the church. During construction, he acted as full-time construction manager through the dedication in 2006. He also provided design service for the conversion of the garage to a student chapel at UNC-Wilmington.

Bob was a charter member and past chairman of the Suffolk County Handicap Advisory Board, Past Grand Knight in the Bay Shore Knights of Columbus, and Past President of the Bay Shore Brightwater Republican Party. He was a charter member of the St. James Fire Department (retired) and the third president of the fire department board of directors.

He is survived by his wife, Diane Kleid, of the home, his sister, Marge Diebner; six children, Barbara Oruc, Karen Tossey, Robert Kleid, Richard Kleid, Jeanmarie Doyle and Daniel Kleid; seven step-children, Denise Barnes, Kathy Lahey, Timothy Greene, Lori Glynn, Thomas Greene, Christine Wernersbach and Janet Wall; 19 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
