STEPHEN HOWARD LEWIS

 

Stephen "Steve" Howard Lewis, 84, died peacefully in his sleep May 17 while at home in Fort Mills, SC., with his wife of 44 years, Patricia Matey Lewis.

Steve was the first son of Stephen Frederic Lewis and Jean Miller Lewis of Ohio and has three surviving siblings, Sally Williams, wife of Jim Williams of Westerville, OH, Paul Lewis of Portland, OR, and Jane Hall, wife of Les, of Atlanta, MI. Besides his loving wife, Steve is survived by his children: daughters, Joanie Lewis Gill of Houston, TX and Brenda Rogers Buchta, wife of Tony Buchta of Columbus, OH, and sons, Mark Rogers and wife, Valerie of Bremen, OH and Patrick Rogers and wife, Elizabeth of Cincinatti, OH.

Steve was also the proud grandfather or "big Guy" to Lindsey Miller, Joshua Rogers, Daniel Rogers, Jessica Sullivan, Tommy Rogers, Madeleine Rogers, Anthony Buchta, Jack Rogers, Danny Rogers, Reagan Gill, Keith Gill, Patch Rogers and five great grandchildren with one on the way.

After graduating from Mt. Sterling H.S. in 1954, Steve began working for the railroad as a safety officer then moved to a career at Household Finance in insurance sales. He stayed in the insurance industry working for E & E Insurance and Anthem Benefits until his retirement in 2002, after which Steve and Pat moved to St. James Plantation in Southport, NC.

He was a member of the 121st TFW, Ohio Air National Guard and deployed to France in 1961-1962. Remembered most as an avid Ohio State fan, Steve rarely missed a football or basketball game as he supported his Buckeyes. In his retirement, he golfed almost daily and volunteered for Meals on Wheels the local Knights of Columbus and as an elementary mentor for Southport schools.
