HOWARD EUGENE GRIFFITH

 

HAMPTON - Howard Eugene Griffith, 84, died Wednesday August 20, 2014 at the VA Hospice in Hampton. He was born in Hannibal, MO the youngest of 8 children. He moved to the Peninsula in 1950 while serving in the US Navy. He retired from the Daily Press as a Printer after 32 years of service. Howard was very involved in the community. He held numerous leadership roles in The International Typographical Union including President. He held the office of secretary-treasurer for the Newport News Democratic Party and served as a "Poll Judge" for his local precinct. He was a member of Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Catholic Church where he served as an usher and was a loyal employee of Weymouth Funeral Home. Howard is survived by his three daughters, Bonnie G. Griffith of Williamsburg, Janet L. Griffith of Yorktown and Amy S. Griffith and her partner, Helen Plaisance of Charlottesville; his sister, Doris Elliott of Las Vegas, NV; his 3 grandchildren, Sara Griffith-McLauglin and Michael and Alexander Klimenko and his former wife and still close friend, Betty Griffith. The family will receive friends on Sunday, August 24, 2014 from 4:00-5:30pm at Weymouth Funeral Home. A Funeral Mass will be conducted on Monday, August 25, 2014 at 4:00pm at Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Catholic Church by Rev. John David Ramsey. Interment will be private. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Mt. Carmel Catholic Church, Outreach Program, 100 Harpersville Rd, Newport News, VA 23601. Arrangements by Weymouth Funeral Home.
