Thomas L. Matthews Jr., 70, of Mill Creek, formerly of Wood and Saxton, passed away on Friday, Nov. 27, 2020, at UPMC Altoona Hospital.
Born in Huntingdon on April 27, 1950, a son of the late Thomas L. and Kay J. (Hampson) Matthews.
He was united in marriage to Carolyn L. (Skvarka) Matthews on April 15, 1978, at the Immaculate Conception Church. Mrs. Matthews preceded her in death on Jan. 17, 2015.
He worked as a coal miner and a bus driver and was a member of the Immaculate Conception Church in Dudley, where he was a cantor and was a member of the choir. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus 916, (Bishop Garvey Assembly-4th Degree), Knights of Columbus Star of the Sea Council 4245, UMWA Local No. 6410, and was a life member of the R.W. & BT. Vol. Fire Co.
Surviving are a daughter, Cathi Kay Beatty, wife of Brett; grandchildren: Alisa, Caitlynn, Connor, Justin and Robert Beatty; a sister, Alice Matthews; stepmother, Lois Matthews; step brothers: Lynn Martz, Todd Martz, Jim Mitchell, George Mitchell and John Mitchell; and stepsisters: Susan Black and Elva Jean Fisher.
Along with his parents and wife, he was preceded in death by a sister, Patricia Matthews; a stepmother, Ruth Matthews; and a stepbrother, Mike Mitchell.
There will be a private Mass by invitation by the family due to restrictions set for by the church regarding the COVID-19 pandemic. The Mass will take place on Wednesday, Dec. 2, at 10 a.m. at the Immaculate Conception Church in Dudley.
Interment will take place in the Ave Maria Cemetery, Dudley.
