COUNCIL #4962 - RAYTOWN- POPE PIUS XII REMEMBERS
JOSEPH JAMES PILSL

March 24, 1951 - October 12, 2018

The heavens are rejoicing, as Joseph 'Big Joe' Pilsl, age 67, joined his departed family, for a celebration. Anyone who knew Joe understands how 'Big' he was. As a retired KCPD Officer, he never had a position he didn’t make his own; from kicking in the door on the SWAT team, to teaching DARE, to Vice, to driving a Paddy Wagon, Joe did it all and loved every minute. He often said, 'I’ve done things most men can only dream of.'

Joe and Sherry were married for 36 years and he credits her for helping him navigate the devastating toll diabetes dealt him, along with giving him a kidney that sustained him for the past 17 years.
Joe was the proud father of two sons Joe (Audrey) and Jared, and grandfather to five beautiful grandchildren: Clayton, Carolyn, Brenner, Michael, and Kamdyn.

Joe impacted so many along this journey of life: from the KCPD to Lone Jack PD. As a founding member of St. Bernadette Parish, he was in the first class of O’Hara High School (which he was asked to not return to after his first year). He also coached little league baseball and was the proud coach of an undefeated boy’s basketball team in the parochial league. He opened his home to anyone that needed a place to stay and that often turned into months as an extended member of his family.

Joe was preceded in death by his parents, Paul and Carolyn and his only sister, Karen Yates. He will be sorely missed by many friends and family that will remember him as the man who was gruff on the outside, but tender in his heart with a smile that could light a room. Proud, loving husband, father and grandfather who always left you laughing.

Joe was a 4th Degree, Honorary member of the Knights of Columbus Council 4962.
