Theodore “Ted” Leo Sautman Jr., 93 years old of Carlyle, died peacefully at St. Joseph’s Hospital in Breese, IL, the morning of October 2, 2018.

Theodore “Ted” Leo Sautman Jr., 93 years old of Carlyle, died peacefully at St. Joseph’s Hospital in Breese, IL, the morning of October 2, 2018.

Ted was born on September 1, 1925, in Carlyle, Illinois, a son of Theodore J. and Helen B. (Seiffert) Sautman. Ted lived his entire life in Carlyle, IL, where he served his community in a myriad of ways. He was first and foremost, a dedicated and loving family man who was a model of faith, loyalty, and lifelong learning.

Ted married Rosalind Winkeler on October 3, 1951 in Bartelso, IL, and she preceded him in death on July 15, 1993. He married Theresa Twigg in 1996, and she preceded him in death on October 31, 2011.

Mr. Sautman served in the United States Navy from 1943-1946 in the Pacific Theater of Operations during World War II. He was a Radioman Second Class (RM2C) and served on the USSLSM 87 and led the USSLSM/LSMR Ship Veterans Association. He worked for the United States Postal Service as a Rural Mail Carrier for the Clinton Country Area for 42 years and was a member of the National Association of Rural Letter Carriers. Ted was an avid traveler and camper who had visited all 50 States of the Union; Past Grand Knight and Treasurer and 50-year member of the Carlyle Knights of Columbus; 50-year member of The American Legion Post #404; Member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Foundation Post #3523; 50-year member of the Clinton County Farm Bureau; and a lifetime member of St. Mary’s Parish in Carlyle.

Mr. Sautman is survived by his daughters: Janice Vander Pluym, Gayle (Phil) Warnecke, Angela Schoendienst; his Grandchildren: Nick (Shannon) and Adam (Carrie) Warnecke, Scott (Lori) and Jesse (Colleen) Schoendienst, Amber (Michael) Rigsby, and Lauren Vander Pluym; ten great-grandchildren; and his siblings: Tom J. (Lucille) Sautman, Mary H. (Sautman) Koch, and Charles “Pat” Sautman.

He was preceded in death by his wives: Rosalind (Winkeler) Sautman and Theresa (Twigg-Howe) Sautman; his parents: Theodore J. Sautman and Helen B. (Seiffert) Sautman; a sister: Dorothy (Sautman) Ballard; and his sons-in-law: Richard Schoendienst and Joseph Vander Pluym.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:00 A.M. on Saturday, October 6, 2018, at St. Mary’s Church in Carlyle with Fr. George Mauck, celebrant. Interment with military honors will follow at St. Mary’s Cemetery in Carlyle. Visitation will be held at Zieren Funeral Home in Carlyle on Friday, October 5, 2018, from 4:00 – 8:00 P.M. and on Saturday morning from 8:00 – 9:30 A.M. The Knights of Columbus will pray the rosary in Ted’s memory at 7:00 P.M. on Friday night at St. Mary’s Church.

In lieu of other gifts, memorials may be made to St. Mary’s Church, The American Cancer Society or The Alzheimer’s Association.

Ted will always be carried in our hearts and memories.
