He was a second career priest, having been ordained to the priesthood at age 60 as a widower after an executive crareer with IBM and raising 4 children. Prior to his ordination by the Diocese of Knoxville in 1993, he served as a permanent deacon in the Archdiocese of New York since 1975. After serving as associate pastor at two diocesan parishes, he was named pastor of St. Thomas the Apostle Catholic Church in 1994. Fr. John was diagnosed with cancer in 1995 and placed on sick leave in August 1995. He returned to New York to be near his family and lost his battle with cancer in Novemeber 1999. Fr. John was one of a few men who received all seven sacraments.
