February 2024

Frank Sharp

We are proud to select Frank Sharp as our Knight of the Month for the month of February. Frank is retired from the Navy as a Command Master Chief. He is a faithful member of St. Patrick Church. He travels 30-40 minutes several times per week to Meridian to help in the kitchen at Bingo and to work in the Parish office. His work at Thursday night Bingo starts around 3:00 pm and lasts until 8:30 pm. He is very faithful in this endeavor. He and his wife Carolyn hold down the front desk at Parish office every Friday until noon, then they attend Mass together. He and Carolyn are big supporters of their many great grandchildren in school and athletics. Frank represents Council 802 as a regular pall bearer as needed. He is also active as a 4th Degree member of Assembly 1251.

Frank Polizzi, PGK

Congratulations to Frank Polizzi PGK our Knight of the Month for January 2024.

It might be easier to list the things that Frank does not do. He has been a member of Council 802 for thirty-two years. Over three plus decades he has been deeply involved in numerous KC programs as either the chairman or as a participant.

During the month of January, he helped chair and run the Pine Derby Workshop for Scouts and Parents to learn how to build a car and to garner tips on making the car faster. He serves as an Usher for the Sunday 11A Mass. He handles the sound equipment for the church and Family Life Center, he provides DJ music for church, school events including the recent KC free throw championship. He serves as our Building Committee Chairman, serves as the Recorder for the Council, serves as the Secretary/Treasurer for the Columbian Club, is one of the KC Bingo Managers and is one of the callers on Bingo night.

There is much more and I could continue but I think you all get the point. BK Frank Polizzi is a very worthy honoree for our Knight of the Month, January 2024.

Bob Leo, PGK

Congratulations to Bob Leo on being chosen as our Knight of the Month for December.
Bob is no stranger to all of our Council activities throughout the year.
For December of 2024, which he is being recognized for, he goes above
and beyond. What would Christmas be without Good Ole Saint Nick? At the
beginning of the month he was the most popular person at the annual St.
Patrick Candy Cane 5k Dash Fund Raiser. Throughout the month he appears
at several assisted living centers bringing joy to our senior citizens.

Of course let us not forget him leading our Council contingency through
the pediatric ward of Jeff Anderson Memorial Hospital to visit children
hospitalized on Christmas Eve with a "Ho, Ho, Ho, Merry Christmas" and a
cute stuffed animal. You can see Bob every Sunday at 11:00 AM Mass at
St. Patrick Church either ushering or standing by to fill in. Every
Thursday night he is behind the computer doing the book work during our
Bingo session and Bob seldom misses a business meeting. I don't know
about you, but I couldn't imagine December without Bob..umm..ugh...I
mean Santa Claus!

Thomas (Tom) Zettler, PSD

This gentleman has had back problems, at times he can barely stand or walk, medical conditions, been hospitalized, taken fall after fall, bruised and knocked down. Even though ALL of his struggles, he continues to attend Mass every week, he attends most all of our Knights of Columbus meetings, BINGO, and other Knight functions.
I have had times when I did not feel like attending a meeting. Then I thought to myself, I know Tom will be there. His practice through all of his struggles encourages me, and I am certain, encourages others to be the best Knights we can possibly be. I think to myself, if Tom can do this, why not me?
That is why I nominate Tom Zettler, PSD, due to his faithfulness and exemplifying example that he exhibits to his fellow Brother Knights

Chris Doss

Congratulations to Chris Doss who has been chosen to represent Council 802 as our May Knight of the Month. Chris is the epitome of a young man leading a Catholic life. He helps his wife Ashley teach First Grade at St. Patrick Parish School of Religion each week. They have a new baby in their family and Chris has picked up the ball and teaches the first graders when Ashley cannot be there.

Chris and Ashley have three children and they have led the two older children into children ministries including serving at Mass and being lectors at Mass.

Chris took it upon himself to learn the intricacies of using incense at Mass, especially when the Bishop says Mass. He is always there to take on those responsibilities when necessary and does it perfectly. He also assists the servers at those Masses. With his busy schedule he does find the time to attend Council meetings.

If you are looking for a Knight who is living the life of what a Knight should be living, look at Chris. I am proud to nominate him as Knight of the Month.

Congratulations to Brother Knight Joe Price on being selected as our Knight of the Month for the month of April. Joe is very active with our St. Patrick Troop 7 of the Boy Scouts of America.

Tom Zettler, PSD

Our congratulations go out to Past State Deputy, Tom Zettler on his selection as our Knight of the month for March. Everyone knows that Tom has physical difficulties, but that has not slowed him down. He works Bingo every Thursday night. When it became impossible for him to work the floor, he took over the window. He is there before 6:00 PM and stays until the end. Tom also puts our Intermission packs together for Bingo on his own time at home.

He attends all of our meetings, both Council and Fourth Degree and actively participates in those meetings. He attends daily Mass at St. Patrick Church. Over the past several weeks he has also given the reflection after the gospel at the children’s Mass on Thursday. This requires him to be at the church at 8:15 AM and you can count on him being there. The children love his reflections as he is very used to talking to small children.

Father Augustine always calls on Tom to do a Communion Service during the week when both priests are out of town. Tom never says that he can’t. Tom sets up Eucharistic Adoration on a weekly basis and spends an hour with our Lord after doing so.

Tom is the epitome of a Knight who keeps on going even when dealing with physical problems.

Marty McCann

Our Knight of the Month for December 2022 is Marty McCann. He has been a Knight and a member of Council 802 since 2016. In recent months Marty has taken on the task of working the front desk during Bingo every Thursday night. As you all know, this is an extremely important job for the Bingo. This is at the entrance of the KC Hall and where customers purchase their bingo packs and receive their ticket for entry. He has handled that duty very well.

Additionally, Marty is active in the local VFW lodge and during the Christmas season served as their Santa Claus for several functions. Marty has been married to his wife Rita for many years. He is a retired sound engineer from Peavey Electronics. He has been very helpful to both parishes over the years with respect to sound systems in each church and the the Family Life Center.

So, again, our congregations go out to Marty on receiving this honor from our council.

Larry Birzer

Our Congratulations go out to Brother Knight Larry Birzer on being selected as our Knight of the Month for November. Larry is one of our parishioners who is involved in the Prison Ministry program with St. Patrick Parish. He and others go out to the Prison in Lost Gap each and every week to minister to the prisoners there. Larry also helps our council with our Adoration program. Larry never refuses to serve an hour on the week that Council 802 is responsible to serve an hour, unless he is out or town. Even on the weeks he has to go to Lost Gap, he will agree to serve an hour either before he goes or afterwards. He is also actively involved in many other council activities.

Edwar, although attending school and working full time, attends council events whenever possible. He is especially appreciated for coming to bingo after work and helping with the last part of the evening.

Gary is very active in our activities, working every week at our Bingo. He also handles the Wednesday Night Suppers for our Catholic Community. He often serves at 5PM Mass on Saturdays. In addition to this, Gary bakes and sells delicious cookies after Mass for the benefit of St. Patrick School. He is an avid woodworker and you might see some of his handy work around the Parish.

Our Knight of the Month for August is Mark Hampson. Mark is a Fourth Degree member who attends St. Joseph. When the K of C bingo program reopened Mark Hampson took over the front office selling the packs as patrons arrive. Mark is the Outside Guard for Council 802 and is a member of the council's new Exemplification team.

Our Congratulations go out to Tom Zettler, PSD for being selected as our Knight of the Month for July. Tom is a dedicated Knight. He works Bingo every Wednesday night. When it became difficult for him to work the floor, he started to work in the office, keeping track of money, making change, and selling packs. He is there from 5:00 PM to at least 10:30 every Wednesday night. In addition, he comes every Tuesday night to put up the Bingo bags Whether or not there is a meeting. He attends all meetings and does anything that is asked of him. Tom attends daily Mass. He does a Communion Service whenever our Pastor cannot do Mass. Tom sets the example for all Knights to follow. In addition to all of that, he helps with Adoration. He Closes on the 1st and 2nd Thursday of each month and opens on the 3rd & 4th Thursday of the month.

He serves as Council 802's Recorder and has done so for several years in a row. Frank is also a Past Grand Knight of the Council. He is Bob Leo's Right Hand Man at our Wednesday Bingo programs.

In addition to all David has done for our council over the years, he is especially deserving this time if not for any other reason but that he was instrumental in Live Streaming our Saturday and Sunday Masses during the COVID 19 lock down.

Roland Stewart

What else can be said about our man of all trades. Roland Stewart is a faithful member of our council and serves as Council 802's Advocate. He is best known for his dedication and faithfulness to the Lauderdale County Habitat for Humanity, and has been instrumental in seeing to it that many houses are being built for those more unfortunate members of our community. For these reasons we are proud to have chosen Roland Stewart as our Knight of the Month for April. Congratulations, Roland.

Rick Berryhill

Congratulations to Rick Berryhill for being selected as our Knight of Month for March. Rick is very active in our Catholic Community. He serves as a Sacristan for the 5:00 PM Saturday and 11:00 AM Sunday Mass, usually at least several times a month. He serves as a Lector for the 11:00 AM Mass. He also teaches the 9th Grade PSR class each Wednesday evening during the school year.

If the above was not enough, he stays after each Mass that he attends to help clean the church and the restrooms and does so cheerfully and with a smile on his face. He and his family live in Newton County so he has a 30-35 minute drive each way to come to the church. That does not deter him in anyway however as he is always supportive for every church function that we have in some capacity. Quite simply, if you ask him to do something, the answer is invariably yes.

His latest undertaking was organizing the Honor Guard for Dr. Danny Santiago's Funeral and also the Rosary that was prayed as a prelude to the Danny's Funeral Mass..

Larry Birzer

Sir Knight Lawrence (Larry) Birzer is our January Knight of the Month. We
selected Larry who is the council’s Faith Director because of the great job he did organizing the January Respect for Life Rosary before the weekend Masses. Larry accomplished the task in spite of being out of town for almost the entire month. Additionally Larry is always ready to step up to the plate for whatever task is at hand. Keep up the good work Lawrence Birzer.

Joe Price

BK Joe Price is our Knight of the Month for December. Joe has been the Scoutmaster of Troop 7 for approximately 20 years. Early in December, a Court of Honor was held and two scouts were awarded their Eagle Medal. They were Josh Everette and Tate Smith. These two young men are fine examples of what Troop 7 is all about. Both of their Eagle projects benefitted St. Patrick Church and School. Josh restriped the St. Patrick Church parking lot. Tate had the St. Patrick School sign replaced and the landscape around the sign refurbished. Next, the troop, as they have been doing for decades, set up the Nativity scene at St. Patrick Church before Christmas. It is always a beautiful addition to our church landscape during the Holiday season. Third, Troop 7 celebrated its one hundredth year of existence during December. Troop 7 has been a great part of the fabric of St. Patrick and the greater Catholic Community and beyond for 100 years. Thousands of boys have benefited greatly from Troop 7 and it is my hope and prayer that it will continue to be a guiding light to boys (and girls now) in the years to come.

Darell Hover

Congratulations go out to Darrell Hover, our Knight of the Month for October, 2020. Darrell has worked very hard on his Sanctity of Life program for Council 802. He has just finished the 40 Days for Life Program and also participated in the 2020 Walk for Life. He, along with fellow Knight Otto Storr and Otto's wife Inez, walked two miles in the Walk for Life. All year, Darrell has participated in any event concerning the Sanctity of Life. He attends every meeting and gives a report on the program. Darrell represents the best a Knight can offer by taking the program seriously and giving updates on what he has done.

David (Dave) Viger

What can you say about this Knight? When he joined the Knights it didn't take long for him to be active. Dave hit the ground running and he hasn't stopped. He served as our Grand Knight on at least two occasions, (maybe more) and he served as the 4th Degree Faithful Navigator. That's just a few of his accomplishments since joining.

Since the COVID 19 struck he has been an immeasurable asset to the Catholic Community of Meridian. When you go on the KofC or the CofM Facebook Live page, although you don't see him, he is the one behind the cameras.

Frank Washington

Mr. Washington is very involved in St. Joseph Parish, The Catholic Community of Meridian, The Knights of Columbus and The Knights of Peter Claver. At St. Joseph's Frank opens the church for Mass as well as ushers and coordinates the clean-up and disinfecting after Mass.
His special ministry is to be at St. Patrick School every morning before the children arrive. A pleasant welcoming male face, who greets the children as they are dropped off. Additionally Frank provides a trained eye to assure that there are no activities or persons in the area who should not be.

Rick has served as our Financial Secretary for quite a number of years now. He can always be depended on to cover an hour at Adoration when Council 802 hosts the second week each month.
Since Masses were suspended due to Covid and since the reopening Rick has been our Cameraman/Switcher for the live steaming of Sunday Mass . Additionally he is training additional people for this position.

Congratulations go out to Brother Frank Washington on being chosen as our Knight of the Month for September. It is a well deserved honor. He helps out in the Kitchens at St. Patrick Family Life Center, the Knights of Columbus Hall on Bingo Night, and also at St. Joseph Church. If there is cooking to be done, you will see Brother Frank present and accounted for. He is also a volunteer once a month for Adoration in the St. Aloysius Chapel in the Parish Center.



Whenever a volunteer is needed around our Catholic Community, you can bet that Brother Frank will be the first on hand to volunteer.

Patrick J (PJ) Carter, PGK

Congratulations to PJ on being selected as our Co-Knight of the Month along with Dr. Luis Borrell, PGK. PJ works at Bingo every week and has done so for many years. He is also very active in our Catholic Community. He was the coordinator of our Readers, Eucharistic Ministers and Altar Server schedules for quite a while. If there is a function going on in our Council, you can bet your bottom dollar that PJ will be there helping out anyone who asks for help.

Dr. Luis Borrell, PGK

Our congratulations go out to Dr. Luis Borrell, PGK, on being selected as our Co-Knight of the Month along with PJ Carter, PGK. Doc is very active in our Catholic Community at both St. Patrick and the Hispanic Community at St. Joseph Church. He helps with the Spanish Mass and even gives the homily in Spanish. He is a longtime member of our community and for many reasons too numerous to mention in this short write up.

Doc is also a regular attendee at the weekly Hour of Adoration at St. Patrick.

Our congratulations go out to our Knight of the Month for July, Frank Polizzi. It is hard to categorize all that brother Polizzi does for our council. He is the recorder at our meetings. He is a past Grand Knight and Faithful Navigator. He is our Bingo co-chairman, as well as one of our callers. He is very active in boy scouts and is an usher at 11:00 Mass on Sundays. I could go on and on about why he deserves this honor, but suffice it to say that he does really deserve it.

Fr. Matthew has supported our council from day one of his arrival at the Catholic Community of Meridian. He is now heading to a new assignment at the Monastery in Culman, Alabama. We wish him well in his new role and hope to see him here at sometime in the future.

Congratulations to our newest Priest in the Jackson Diocese, Fr. Nick Adam on being chosen as our Knight of the Month for the month of May. Fr. Nick is a Brother Knight in Council 802 and we are so very proud of him for heeding God's call to the Priesthood.

Richard (Rick) Norman

Congratulations to Brother Richard Norman on being selected as our Knight of the Month for the March. Rick is our Financial Secretary and has been for several years. Besides handling this demanding job on a daily basis, he also works at the front desk of our Bingo program on Wednesday nights selling bingo sheets to our customers.

Ed Shamp

Ed has dedicated his time to our council in many ways over the years, but the one thing he did a long time ago, when our Warden, Dr. Richard Fleming, died was to agree, along with John Bennett to take over running our bar and kitchen facilities. However, more recently he was instrumental in ramrodding our restroom facilities upgrade to meet the American Disabilities Act. If you have not been to any functions at the Hall to see the difference this has made, then, you owe it to yourself to come have a look see. The facilities are equal to or better than any Five Star Hotel in the country.

Bob is a Past Grand Knight and has been serving as our Bingo Chairman for many years. Thanks to his service, our council is able to carry on with our charitable works, which is the essence of what our council stands for.

Joseph (Joe) Semmes, PGK

Joe Semmes has been a God Send to our School and in many cases to our council. On the night we had our Flag Retirement Ceremony, Joe made a special trip to the KC Hall to replace some lights at our Flagpole. Over the years he has done many things for our council and for our school, sometimes gratis.

In years past, Joe served as our Grand Knight for a three year span. Hopefully, when/if he finally retires we can get him active again.

Darrell Hover

Our congratulations are, once again, extended to Brother Knight, Darrell Hover, on being selected as our Knight of the Month for the month of October.

Darrell is our Culture of Life Chairman and is extremely proactive in the National Problem of Abortion. He coordinates the annual Prayer Vigil in Jackson for our council.

Congratulations to Noelle on being selected as our Knight of the Month for May. Noelle is a recently received catholic through the RCIA program at St Patrick Parish. He graduated from high school this year and is now headed off to be a member of the Marines.

He joined the Council immediately after finishing RCIA and has been most helpful in different activities of Council 802. He has helped at Wednesday Night Bingo on many occasions.

Congratulations to Dave Klutz on being selected to be our Knight of the Month for the month of March.
Dave is very active in council activities and serves as our Deputy Grand Knight/Youth Director/Program Chairman. When no one volunteered to take on the position as the Council Youth Chairman Dave took it upon himself to do just that. He refers to himself as the "Acting" Youth Chairman, but we all know that he is just too much involved in the youth of St Patrick/St Joseph churches, to allow them to be ignored by the our council.

Taupule' (Tau) Iosia

Tau, as he is affectionately called, is one of Council 802's chief cook and bottle washer. Whenever we have a family potluck supper at the KC Hall, you can be sure that Tau had his hands in the preparation of the food, etc. However, he doesn't restrict himself just to the KC Hall. No, he is also quite present at the St Patrick Family Life Center on numerous occasions.

In fact, he was instrumental in planning and preparing, with help, Fr Frank's Farewell Luncheon in the Family Life Center on Sunday, January 31st. All who came, and there were many, enjoyed the time to say goodbye to our Pastor of the last 11 years, Fr. Frank Cosgrove, whom we will sorely miss.

So, without further ado, let us Congratulate Tau Iosia on being chosen as our Knight of the Month for the Month of January.

Robert (Bob) Leo

Congratulations to Bob on being chosen as our Knight of the Month for December. Bob is very active in many of our council functions, but none better than the Childrens' Christmas party and our annual visit to the Meridian Hospitals on Christmas Eve where he steps in as a quite outstanding Santa Claus. He also makes an appearance at our annual Easter Egg hunt as the Easter Bunny.


Also, he is our Family Chairman and our Bingo Manager. Were it not for our BINGO program, we could perform one of our principles (Charity).


He is active in many other functions including our State Family Director.


When you see Bob at Mass (Usually 11 o'clock at St Patrick) or any where you might run into him, congratulate him on this honor.

Thomas (Tom) Zettler, PSD

Congratulations to Tom on being chosen as our Knight of the Month for November. What else can I say about Tom, or TZ as we affectionately call him. Tom is wrapped up in almost every activity we have at Council 802 and also at St Patrick church. He is also a Past State Deputy.

George Walston, FS

Congratulations to our September Knight of the Month, Brother George Walston!

Brother George has been, and continues to be, a true cornerstone in our Council. He is extremely active in both, council and church. He has served as our Financial Secretary for many, many years and is a recognized subject matter expert and "go to man" at the state level regarding the duties and responsibilities of a FS. He dedicates time every week to our Catholic youth instructing in the Parish School of Religion, he routinely takes an active role in the weekend mass, he is very dedicated to Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament, is a regular in supporting our Bingo program and the list goes on and on!

Congratulations again, very well deserved!

Fr. Patrick Smith (Deceased)

Congratulations to Fr. Pat Smith on being selected as our Knight of the Month for August. Fr. Pat has been a member of our council since 1978. He was a late bloomer to the priesthood, mainly because he made sure that his aging parents were taken care of before committing to become a priest. After their deaths, Fr. Pat took the vow of priesthood and has served our diocese for a number of years.


He recently retired due to health problems. It was this problem that finally took his life on Saturday, August 29th.

One of the most important hats he wears is as our Bingo Manager. It is a thankless job, but Bob does it well. Congratulations to Tom on being chosen as our Knight of the Month for January. What is left to say about this Knight. He is involved in every aspect of our council, from serving as our Treasurer to working Bingo, to being at every function undertaken by the council. It is rather ironic to note that on a month when he didn't participate in any of our functions he is chosen as our Knight of the Month. I should point out that the reason for his lack of participation was not without good cause, as TZ spent most of the month of January in the hospital with Double Pneumonia among other health problems. We are most thankful to the Lord that he was spared to continue his dedicated and unselfish service to our council. Congratulations again Sir Knight.
