March 2024

The Rick and Paula Berryhill Family

We would like to congratulate the Rick and Paula Berryhill family for being selected as our Knights of Columbus Family of the Month for March 2024. This couple has been married 34 years. They have four children Hannah (32), Louise (29), Michael (21) and Cooper (16).
This family is very active in our Catholic Community. Both Paula & Rick serve as Sacristan for the 11:00 AM Sunday Mass, usually at least several times a month. She also cleans/irons the liturgical linens for St. Patrick Church. She is the instructor for new Altar Servers for both churches. Rick, Paula and Michael serve as Lectors for the 11:00 AM Mass. Rick and Michael serves as Ushers for the 11:00 AM Mass. Rick teaches the 1st Year Confirmation class for our Parish School of Religion (PSR). Rick also serves as a Boy Scoutmaster of an active troop in Newton County.
During the month of March, Rick served as a Chaperone and also drove the bus for the youth during the DCYC weekend in Vicksburg. Paula and Rick were both instrumental in the planning and execution of all the Holy Week services. Paula brought her sewing machine to the church to stitch and hem some of the Liturgical items such as the altar cloths. Rick attended the Chrism Mass on Tuesday of Holy Week in the Cathedral of St. Peter in Jackson. They both served in several different liturgical capacities during the Holy Week services.
The Berryhill family lives in Newton County so they have a 30-35 minute drive each way to come to the church. That does not deter them in anyway however as they are always supporting or are working at virtually every church function that we have in some capacity. Quite simply, if you ask this family to do something, the answer is invariably yes.

February 2024

The John Cylkowski Family

John and Sarah Cylkowski and their eight Children are our February 2024 Family of the Month.
John is a Marine instructor pilot. Sarah manages the home and homeschools the children with a Catholic curriculum. The children are from 14 down to almost 1 yr. They attend Mass as a family at least one a week in addition to Sunday. Amelia the oldest and only daughter is a lector at Mass. The two oldest boys Ben and Jack are altar servers. Their youngest son Ambrose provides Fr. Augustine regular opportunities for a ‘baby fix’. The family prays the rosary at home with the children taking turns leading.
Al of these reasons and more are why we selected the John and Sarh Cylkowski Family as our February 2024 Family of the month.

This family operates El Norte Restaurant on 22nd Avenue Heights and the business has been extremely supportive of St. Patrick School as well as both churches hosting Spirit Nights to benefit the school and donating food and other in-kind services to the parish community during the festivals and programs that are held throughout the year.

Congratulations to the Espino Family, an honor well earned and deserved.

Active in all phases of Council activities this family is normally at the forefront doing whatever needs to be done, John has served several terms as Grand Knight of our Council and Nelda has been active in the activities of the ladies. Both are always present at our flag raising events showing their civic pride with their participation. What an example of love and unity they to others. Debbie is also active in Knight events. She helps in the kitchen and bar during Bingo. (She also makes excellent Banana pudding which all of the Knights love, and is one of the best benefits of working Bingo.) Debbie is in charge of keeping the Hall clean and it always looks clean and orderly. Debbie also helps with Wednesday night suppers at the church. She is a great example of a hard worker who always does what she says she will do. Together, they set a great example of a Knight family that is involved and always does great work.

August 2021

The Teresa LaBiche Family

We are proud to honor the Teresa LaBiche family. Teresa is the widow of our late Brother Knight, Maurice LaBiche. During August, she filled in at the KC Hall working in the kitchen and the bar during a couple of our Wednesday Night Bingo sessions.
She also organized a lunch for a family after a funeral at St. Patrick Church. This family had quite a number of family/friends from out of town and by all accounts they were very appreciative of the meal.
She assisted a couple of different families with locating the correct plot in two different cemeteries so that their loved ones could be laid to rest in peace. Often, these can become thorny issues and in these two cases Teresa helped to ensure that those items did not become problematic for the families involved.
Every Sunday afternoon, she is at St. Patrick Church well in advance of the 3:00 p.m. Spanish-English bilingual Mass. She serves numerous roles there, including Sacristan, Usher, securing the collection bag etc.
If all that is not enough, she coordinates the upkeep of St. Patrick Cemetery and schedules the crew of men who are the caretakers of the grounds. This is something she has been doing for over twenty years. Previous to that, her father, Joe Bailey, who was a Brother Knight, did the same for many decades.
Teresa also serves when needed at Adoration. She is the go to person when needed to cover an hour.
We are proud to select the LaBiche family as our Family of the Month for August.

L-R Brent, McKinley, Mary Lee & Christi

Congratulations to you on being chosen as our Family of the Month for the month of February.

January 2021

Dr. Minh Duong & Dr. Thi Bui Family

The family of BK Dr. Minh Duong and his wife Dr. Thi Bui are our Family of the Month for January. Both are Optometrists and practice in the Meridian area. They have three children (Tytan – age 10) and twins (Tinsley & Timmy – age 8). The children are students at St. Patrick School and are in the 5th grade and 2nd grade respectively.
This family has been a member of St. Patrick Church for a number of years. Dr. Duong has been a member of the St. Patrick School Advisory Council for at least four years and has served as the President of the Council for several terms. One of the highlight events that the Council puts on is the annual School Countdown and Dr. Duong has been very active in that endeavor over the recent years. It is the largest fundraiser for the school each year.
Dr. Bui, likewise has been heavily involved in the Parent School Association (PSA) during the recent years. She has worked during virtually every PSA sponsored event i.e. the Candy Cane Dash, the Disney Raffle, Irish Fest, Catholic Schools Week etc. She often works behind the scenes doing things such as putting up the signs/banners that promote the events in advance, organizing the staff recognition lunch during CSW, selling ads for the various activities etc. She avoids the limelight but is very much a big reason for the success of the PSA over the last 3-4 years.
Their three children have been involved with school/church Masses to the extent possible. Tytan has been serving as an Alter Server the last couple of years until the pandemic stopped our young people from being able to serve at Mass. Tytan is also a member of the Beta Club. All three of the children have handled Liturgical duties (serving as the Commentator, Reader, as well as proclaiming the Intercessions) during the Thursday School Masses. Each is already well versed in their Catholic Faith and are very good students in addition to being well mannered children in the classroom. Finally, this is a very warm family. If you ever have an encounter with Minh, Thi or one of their children, they almost always have a smile on their face.

December 2020

Erica & Wade Heggie Family

The Family of the Month for December 2020 is the Wade and Erica Heggie family. While Wade is not of the Catholic Faith, he regularly attends Mass and is very supportive of Erica and the children who are all very faithful parishioners of St. Patrick. Erica is a PSR teacher (5th and 6th grades this year). She is an excellent teacher. I have observed her classroom on several occasions and her students are always well behaved with good manners. She has a great curriculum that she teaches the students that incorporates the PSR book and her own supplementary information that creates a conducive environment for learning. Their older daughter, Megan (17) has been very active in our Catholic Young over the recent years. She has participated in a number of the outreaches that we did before the pandemic put those to a halt. She is currently in the second year Confirmation group and will celebrate the Sacrament later this spring. She has served as a Lector at numerous youth Masses over the recent years, covering all the duties including Commentator, Reader and proclaiming the Prayers of the Faithful. She is a smart, well-mannered young lady and is always a joy to be around. Matthew (8) received his First Holy Communion back in August and likewise I expect as he gets older he will be involved in the Liturgy of the Mass as a Youth as well as the CYM. To sum up, the Heggie Family lives their Catholic Faith every day. On a personal note, Erica has been very helpful to me this year with the difficulties that we have endured with PSR and the disruptions that the virus has created. I will be forever grateful to her for that.

John Harwell

November 2020

Karen & Tau Iosia Family

This family is a mainstay at the 5 PM Saturday Mass helping in every way during this current pandemic. They can always be relied upon and are worthy of this honor.

October 2020

Pam and George Walston

Our congratulations go out to George and Pam Walston, our Family of the Month for October. George is the editor of our monthly Council 802 and Assembly 1251 Newsletters. He does a great job on it and it is always professionally completed in a timely manner. George and Pam also make the weekly schedule of Thursday Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament. This entails contacting each person to make sure they will be there and then making up the schedule. They also either set up Adoration or take it down at the end. Pam has been instrumental in the cleaning of the church during normal times. She makes up the schedule, ensures that ladies can be there, and sends out the schedule to all workers. Both George and Pam were instrumental in ACES. They were always there. Pam would cook, make door prizes and George would call Bingo on many occasions. They are a great example of a family working behind the scenes to make our Council, Assembly, and Church a better place.

She is the homeroom teacher for the 5th grade and teaches English, language arts and social studies to both the 5th and 6th grade students.
John & Sandra are neighbors in their hometown of Quitman, MS to the Oregon family (who are also St. Patrick parishioners). They have two children (Italy-6 and Isadora-3). Sandra brings these two children to St. Patrick School each day. The older child, Italy, asked her if she would be their grandmother and she said that touched her heart and she said yes. So in addition to the grandchildren listed above they have two adopted grandchildren. They treat the Oregon family as if they were their own family.
John & Sandra attend Mass regularly at St. Patrick church and Sandra said “To touch the lives of children and adults is the most rewarding gift you could ever give.”

Jorge & Montse have been married 16 years and are wonderful parents to their two children. Jorge is a
tremendous husband and dad who leads this faith filled family and does much behind the scenes. Montse is
now in her 4th year as Principal of St. Patrick School. In my humble opinion, she has been the best Principal
that our school has had over the last 30 years. Her academic standards for all the students is very high,
discipline is enforced, spiritual faith enrichment is at the top of the chart and her support for our teaching staff
is unwavering. During the last six months in the face of this pandemic, she has worked tirelessly to make
our school the best environment possible for our students. As a result, our school opened its doors on
August 10th and the teachers and students have not missed a beat and learning is going well even with the
restrictions that are in place. It was all due to the many hours preparation that she directed and worked
through the late spring and throughout the summer months. Early on, she was the recipient of much criticism
from many parents, parishioners, teachers etc, yet in the face of that she remained committed to taking all
the extra steps necessary to keep our children safe. To this point, her efforts have proven to be successful.
The older daughter, Macarena is a 7th grader and Alana is a 5th grader at St. Patrick School. Both are
excellent students and they are each very well versed in their faith. Both are Altar Servers and Lectors for
the school and weekend Masses. Both of these young ladies have been involved in our youth group,
participating in the youth choir and in numerous youth events/programs/activities. Both participated in our
card writing outreach that started in March and concluded in July. Our youth wrote homemade cards to our
home-bound, assisted living and nursing home parishioners, family members and friends. Macarena and
Alana also participated in leading the Rosary each Thursday afternoon when our youth were leading the
phone-in Rosary.
To sum it up, the Frias Family sets a great example of what family is and should be. They attend Mass
regularly as a family and they are all deeply involved in Parish and School.

May 2020

Brandon & Katie Rutledge

This family is involved in numerous aspects of both St. Patrick Church & School. Katie is a member of the Liturgy Committee. She and Brandon are responsible for the flowers in the church, the banners and the drape that is changed numerous times on the crucifix during the Lenten and Easter seasons. Katie is the President of the school PSA which gives a tremendous amount of support to the school from school/parish families and beyond. Some of the activities and programs they run and/or support include but are not limited to the Candy Cane Run, Catholic Schools Week, Irish Fest, Disney Raffle etc.
Oh I have not mentioned Helena yet. She just completed the third grade at the school and is an excellent student. She serves a Lector during the School Masses (when the third grade is responsible for the duties of the Mass) and during the weekend Masses including both the Youth and regular Masses. At the conclusion of the school year she was honored for being on the Principal"s List, Spanish Distinction Club, Choir Member, AR Reading, Shamrock Club just to name a few items. Additionally, she has been participating in our youth card writing ministry outreach that started the first of April.
Brandon is a great husband and father and when you see one of this family almost always you see all three as they live and worship as one.

April 2020

Ross & Cindy Waguespack

This family of five has been a very active part of our Parish, particularly over the last year. Ross serves in the military and works at Key Field (He is part of J-TAC with the Air National Guard). Ross is also a new member of Council 802. Cindy home - schools their three children (Bella - 10, Molly - 8, Allan - 5). The three children are very well mannered, polite, smart, very active in PSR and are already well versed in their Catholic Faith. Bella is a member of our Youth Choir and has been participating in our Youth program during this year. She has been participating in leading the Rosary on the Youth day on Thursday's.

Cindy was the parent who suggested to me to start our card writing outreach to our parishioners who are in nursing homes, assisted living centers and/or home bound. This outreach has proven to be very successful and this family has embraced it. As I was launching the outreach back in April, I asked each youth to send cards out to five parishioners. This family sent out cards to everyone on the list (the list contains 39 names) not just once or twice but now are on their third round. Cindy also shared with me that as each of the children were creating the cards, they would pause from time to time to pray for the recipient. Several of the recipients of these cards have sent back thank you notes and other correspondence to these children as well.

This family was also heavily involved in our Children's Christmas Mass December 24thBella and Molly were both in the choir and Allan was a part of the Gospel Manger scene. Cindy also played clarinet during the Mass.

If that was not enough, Cindy and the children are a part of the Merciful Mufflers Ministry that is led by Mary Billups and they have been making the mask extenders that the group has been doing to give out to the Meridian Health Community and our own parishioners.

An additional side note on the MMM, the group created a blanket that they gave Father Augustine for Christmas and Bella crochet one of the squares herself.

March 2020

Rick and Paula Berryhill Family

We would like to congratulate the Rick and Paula Berryhill family for being selected as our Family of the Month for March. This family is very active in our Catholic Community. Paula serves as a Sacristan for the 5:00 PM and 11:00 Mass, usually at least twice a month. She also cleans the liturgical linens for St. Patrick Church. She is now the instructor for new Altar Servers for both churches. Rick serves as a Lector for the 11:00 AM Mass. Their son, Michael, is a 10th grader who is in his first year of Confirmation preparation. He serves as an Altar Server and a Lector during the Youth Masses. Their younger son, Cooper, is an Altar Server. Their older daughter, Hannah, is a member of the 11:00 AM Mass Choir. This family lives in Newton County so they have a 30-35 minute drive each way to come to the church. That does not deter them in anyway however as they are always supporting or are working at virtually every church function that we have in some capacity. Quite simply, if you ask this family to do something, the answer is invariably yes.
