On January 27, 2017 marked the 44th annual March for Life in Washington, D.C. This event was a powerful example of what can be done with a peaceful protest. Many young and old people marched to show that we must protect the most vulnerable of us all. A great example of this commitment to life could be seen by Brother Knight Tony Rivera-Silva, his wife Crystal, and their three children all marching together. This was certainly a long day for the little ones leaving first thing in the morning and not getting home until well after 9 PM, but they were all smiling every time I saw them that day. Please take a minute to thank Brother Tony and Crystal for their example and congratulate them as our February Family of the Month.

January 2017

Sir Knight Stephen and Donna Raschke

Steve serves both the Council and Assembly locally, but also serves the State Council of Virginia. Even though he is the Immediate Past State Deputy, he and Donna still find time to attend Council events and often can be found both before and after events helping out where ever they are needed – managing to contribute time even though he is very busy as the Faithful Navigator of Assembly 2430. Steve has been a mentor to me since I took my first degree; he traveled to Gloucester for the ceremony and welcomed me into the Order. I am pleased to name SK Stephen and Donna Raschke our January Family of the Month.

December 2016

SK Angelo and Carol Cavone

Our Family of the Month for December are instrumental in our youth activities. Brother Angelo and Carol arrange our youth activities. Please help me congratulate Angelo and Carol Cavone as our Family of the Month.

November 2016

Brother Tony and Terri Merendino

Brothers, I am sure you all know how much time PGK Tony puts into our Council. He is always at council meetings and volunteering at bingo. He and Terri support almost every event from Fridays in the lounge to the many fund raising dinners. Either attending or volunteering, they always show their support. This is not however why I thought of them as Family of the Month for November. I had the great opportunity to share a long conversation with both of them this past month at the Hispanic Heritage dinner and I learned that they had just celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary. This fact struck me deeply, to see their example of Christian Marriage, in this time when there are so many challenges to the sanctity of marriage, out of control divorce rates, and same-sex marriages. I felt we should all take a moment to celebrate this example in our midst of the love and faith shown by the Merendino Family. Please join me in congratulating our November family of the month, Tony and Terri Merendino.

October 2016

SK Wilfred and Herma Wotke

Wilfred has served the council as recorder for two years. He and his wife Erma volunteer for many events throughout the year. They also worked very hard on our first joint
Oktoberfest with the Tidewater German American Society, being instrumental in making this event a great success. Please join me in thanking and congratulating our October family of the month SK Wilfred and Herma Wotke.

September 2016

They do all this while still raising a family of 4, both of them volunteering as Scout Leaders, Robbie and his daughter Abby support the Nocturnal Adoration Society at OLMC. I count myself lucky to have them as friends and I hope you take a moment to congratulate Robbie and Jeanette DeBartolo, our September Family of the Month

February 2016

Brother Larry and Mary Jo O'Bryan

New Year’s Eve was a big celebration all around the world. His wife does outstanding arts and crafts for the children events. They are a true pleasure to have as members and friends to a lot of us. Please help me congratulate Jim and Karen Kazmer as our Family of the month.

They are usually seen wearing aprons hanging out in the kitchen. Every once in a while, they venture out to the main hall to receive a congratulatory applause on the meal of that event. They cover Friday nights for the Council with many, many events. You can receive a smile from them, and also how to properly run an event that is serving food. I do not know what we will do without them because of the many things they do that go unnoticed. This family is truly very good friends of mine and I hope of yours also. Please help me congratulate Colleen Messier and Rose and Tyler Powell as our Family of the Month.

Chaplain Rev. Carlos Lerma and Faithful Friar Rev. Henry Diesta.

Congratulations to “Our Fathers” in Newport News, Worthy Chaplain Rev. Carlos Lerma and Faithful Friar Henry Diesta.

When Reverend Father Carlos H. Lerma was in his early 20s and looking for direction in his life, he went to his parish priest for guidance. At the Sacred Heart of Jesus Church he began helping minister to the poor in his small hometown of Buga, Colombia. After a year, he sensed that this was the life to which he was called. With the help of his pastor, Fr. Carlos immediately set in motion a path to the priesthood. It would take him 12 years to get there.
Today Father Carlos is the Parochial Vicar at Our Lady of Mt. Carmel. He is fluent in Spanish and English and serves as Chaplain of both Council 5480 and Council 11817. Father Carlos is a regular at council functions and will always remain behind to hear a confession. We are blessed to have Father Carlos.
Reverend Father Henry Diesta, a priest of the Diocese of Sorsogon in the Philippines, was appointed Pastor of St. Jerome Church in Newport News in 2009. Father Henry was well received into the large Newport News Filipino community and quickly adopted Council 5480 as his brothers. Father Henry spent his entire five years ministering to the Sir Knights of the Rev. Michael Bader Assembly as the Faithful Friar. Father Henry will be returning to his home Diocese this summer. We will miss you.

This couple is the epitome of “love and marriage” at any age. Seldom do you see one without the other at an event or social gathering. Cheerful, happy, gleeful, pleasant are words that can describe them each time that one meets them. They always have a “happy” attitude. He rarely misses a Council or Assembly meeting and both are at most events held. He is always there when you need someone to help. He has been a member of the Order since March 1984. He is a sentinel in the Assembly. He coordinates and directs one of the most successful programs of the Council. The “Adopt-A-Spot” program (monthly policing of a section of Warwick
Boulevard) has won rave reviews, praise and awards from members of the Council and City officials. He is also proud member of the 4th Degree Color Corps where he gets the chance to showcase his flair for clothes. They attend Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church where they continue to be involved in various ministries. Although they have no “little ones”, they are very giving of their time and donations at our local schools. Please join me in congratulating Theodore (“Ted”) and Estelle Langevin as our Family of the Month for March 2013.

February 2013

SK Todd and Margie Curtis

This Brother has been a member of the Order since February 2011. He is also a Sir Knight in the Assembly. He and his wifeand children attend St Jerome Church. He serves as the Fraternal Benefits Advisor of the Council assisting fellow Brother Knights in investments and times of planning and bereavement. If this was not enough to keep him busy, he finds time to coordinate the Youth Council events to include Laser Tag, Halloween Carnival/Haunted House, Father/Daughter-Mother/Son dance, Alter Server outings, etc. His wife is a constant fixture in the halls and classrooms of St Jerome where she serves as Director of Christian Formation. Please join me in congratulating Todd, Margie and the “darling seven” as our Family of the
Month for February 2013.

January 2013

Brother William "Bill" and Helen Allen

This Brother took his First Degree on September 1, 1978. Records of his second and third degrees are not available (possibly because of his military assignments and
reassignments during his distinguished service to our country as an Air Force Officer). He and his wife attend St Jerome Catholic Church where both have been and are very active in various Church ministries to include the parish council, Lector and Eucharistic Ministry and daily Masses. They both participate in Christian Formation. He works weekly Bingo in any capacity needed to include counter sales, assistant manager and as Caller. He is very active in the community as a school and sports league official. He is Council Church Director for St Jerome Church, a member of
the Assembly Color Corp and a Past Grand Knight. Join me in congratulating William (“Bill”) and Helen Allen as our Family of the Month for January 2013.
