Catching Fire

This Family is relatively new to the Parish and is already making a big impact.
Some of their service projects included holding a sock drive for the migrant
farmers on the Eastern Shore and Christmas Caroling at Our Lady of Perpetual
Health – Assisted Living Center. Their most recent service project was at the Fish
Fry where guests were greeted with infectious smiles and youthful energy. They
took care of the Front of the House giving the old guys a night off to relax and
socialize. Not only did they serve the food, but they also cleaned up at the end of
the night and that included the Back of the House. They were back in the deep
sink area paying their dues and they knew how to use the commercial dishwasher
as well. I’m sure they will be able to teach anyone who is interested how to use it
as well. You’re never too old to learn a new trick. I hope this partnership with the
Council continues after my term as Grand Knight and we find more things to do
together. It is my pleasure to award Family of the Month to Catching Fire.

February 2024

Ken and Johnna Levins

This Brother Knight has ghosted Council meetings for the majority of the Fraternal Year. So much so, I started getting a complex. That subsided when I found out that he was ghosting other meetings as well. The Faithful Navigator of Assembly #2588 even put this Brother Sir Knight on the Prayer List in hopes he would be at the next meeting and in true fashion, the Lord does answers prayers as he was at the next meeting. When his program’s “season” came up, he was there in full force. He raised over $500 during the Baby Bottle Drive manning each Mass. He and his Lady helped shut down the Spaghetti Dinner by making sure everything in the kitchen was dry and put in its proper place. He also headed a very successful Silver Rose Prayer Service which brought in a new Brother Knight who is also a Propaedeutic to boot. His writeup of the event also earned him well-deserved praise from the State Faith Program Deputy and the scorn of the State Programs Deputy Director. Apparently, we poached the Seminarian from his Council, Council #7496. I have come to find his knowledge and advice invaluable. His Lady is a Past President of the Ladies Auxiliary and is on the Parish’s Money Counting Team. She always has a batch of cookies for Francis during Christmas and her upside-down pineapple cake makes Aurelia feel a little less homesick. This family is also a member of the Church of the Ascension Lumen Christi Legacy Society Chapter. It is my pleasure to award Family of the Month to the Levins Family.

January 2024

St. Teresa Council Ladies Auxiliary

This Family always shows up ready to support the Council. In fact, they were the first family to support me from my installation as Grand Knight. This family can be seen supporting Council events from our Pancake Breakfasts to the Car Shows to the Special Olympics Fall Championships to the Grandparents Party/ Coats for Kids to our last event, the Council Christmas Party. Every time my wife received a compliment about the Christmas Party, she proudly gave credit to this family. This Council family really stepped up their game and made it truly a night to remember. It is my pleasure the award Family of the Month for January to the St Teresa of Calcutta Ladies Auxiliary.

December 2023

Glenn and Joanne Webb

This family is the definition of service to the the Parish. The husband has been a Knight of this Council for 8 years along with their son. Their son can be seen around the Church keeping it spotless. Their daughter is part of the Church’s Music Ministry and their son-in-law is part of the Choir and Liturgical Ministry as well as the Parish Council. The wife is a part of the Ladies Auxiliary and is a former President and Trustee. She is also a part of the Music Ministry as well. If that wasn’t enough, she prepares crafts for the children at events and makes sure that there is plenty of chocolate milk for the kids, even for the big ones. She is also the face that welcomes visitors to the Church office. She has helped me navigate the administrative procedures of the Parish and her advice is warmly welcomed. It is my pleasure to announce Family of the Month to the Webb Family.

November 2023

Bruce and Kathy Stevens

This family is always seen together. They are a constant when it comes to Council events. In fact, they are the driving force behind our Council Blood Drives as well as the Special Olympics Fall Championship soccer venue. The husband serves on the Safety Team Ministry ensuring that we all can enjoy Mass without worries. His sweeter half is the Council’s point of contact with the American Red Cross and the Special Olympics and up until recently OLPH. You can even find their daughter Mary not too far behind. Whenever the Council’s Car Show does not conflict with the Pack’s Family Campout, Francis enjoys the cotton candy this family provides. He was even allowed to drive a golf cart at the soccer venue. It is my pleasure to award the Family of the Month for the month of November to the Stevens family.

October 2023

Bernard and Charlotte Sokolsky

This family is always seen out together. They are a constant when it comes to Council events, especially when it comes to the Cruise-Ins. The family even hung out with the father so he didn’t have to weather 6 hours alone with me the Grand Knight over Labor Day Weekend. The wife is a part of our Ladies Auxiliary and the husband makes sure that the finances of our Council are kept straight which I can appreciate. Even this former Boatswain’s Mate can appreciate their daughter’s work ethic as she helped with tearing down the Cruise-Ins. It is my pleasure to award Family of the Month for October to the Sokolsky Family.

September 2023

Mark and Lisa Liedl

This family is well known in the Church. In fact, this family serves not one but two Parishes. This Brother Knight is currently in the Diaconate Program for the Byzantine Rite at Our Lady of Perpetual Help where he can be found on Wednesday nights. The better half of this family helped lay the cornerstones of this Parish and continues to be one of it’s main supports. She can be found at the Church any day of the week except when on a well-deserved holiday. Even then, she is available if needed. She is one of our Council’s main supporters and is one of the reasons why I joined the Knights as well as this Parish. You can often hear her refer to us as “Her Knights”. It is my pleasure to award the Family of the Month for September to the Liedl Family.

August 2023

Your Ascension Family Presents

This Family really made sure that the summer was spirit filled and fun for all ages. If you weren’t there, well, you missed out on a great time. Two of Jesus’ parables and two of His miracles were acted out with a spiritual reflection presented which included one from Seminarian Brennen McCoy, a Brother Knight from Father Christopher Hess’ parish, St Theresa Catholic Church in Farmville, VA. We are truly blessed to have Your Ascension Family Presents… as August’s Family of the Month. Janet Jones and Bridgett Passauer representing Church of the Ascension

July 2023

Don and Nancy Poole

This Family really stepped up to the plate when called upon with short notice. Not only did they do the shopping; they also provided their expertise in helping with the Catching Fire Ministry cookout to celebrate the end of the school year. This husband-and-wife team also helped educate the Church of Ascension’s youth throughout the year as Catechists. It is my pleasure to present Family of the Month for the month of June to the Poole Family.

June 2023

Bruce and Kathy Stevens

This couple has been active the past month in two important initiatives. You can find them supporting our fundraiser at the Car Show with their Cotton Candy booth. You can also see them supporting our community at OLPH as they have been leading the Rosary Prayer and BINGO for the last few months. I was able to join them last time and the residents were very happy with our support. This Brother Knight has been a constant member of the Council leadership serving as one of our Guards. I am proud to award the Family of the Month to Bruce and Kathy Stevens (to add to their growing collection!)

May 2023

Ascension Music Ministry

To switch things up a bit from the traditional recognition for Family of the Month, I decided to recognize one of the most impactful Ministries in our Ascension Parish. If you have ever been moved by the Holy Spirit during Mass or been filled with joy at the beautiful voices of our Choir …or attended the solemn moments of the Adoration at the first Friday of the month, then your ears and hearts have been touched by our wonderful Ascension Music Ministry. This award goes out to Diane Nestor and all those who contribute their musical talents to this ministry

March 2023

Bruce and Kathy Stevens

What can I say about this Worthy Sir Knight and his wife. As I think back on all the activities that our Council has been involved in, these two can be seen at almost every one of them. They are the cornerstone of our Blood Drives, Special Olympics, and many other initiatives that support our community and Parish at Ascension. They supported both Fish Fry’s last month as well. This Brother Knight is very humble and has a servant leader’s heart…doing what he does for the benefit of others. I am honored to name our Family of the Month for March: Bruce& Kathy Stevens

February 2023

Max and Aurelia Kang

This Sir Knight and his family are very active in our Ascension Parish. He serves as an Officer is one of the most important roles in the Council and is always dependable to do anything that is asked. His passion for the success of our Council is without equal. His wife is active with a number of Parish ministries including Grief Share. This Brother Knight also serves in ministries like the finance committee money counters. If there is a Council activity, you can be sure to see him and his young family there. It is a privilege to recognize our Family of the Month for February to Max and Aurelia Kang and their son, Francis!

January 2023

John Wilson family

This Brother Knight has joined our Council within the last year and has been active in a number of activities. He can be seen at weekly Mass with his sons that he is raising primarily on his own. One of those sons just turned 18 and he kept a promise to have him join our Council once he came of age. That happened last month at our Combined Degree Exemplification. This Brother’s skill in his chosen profession and his willingness to host a fishing outing when the weather warms up will add value to our Council’s goals and initiatives. It is my pleasure to award our FOM for January to Brother John Wilson!

December 2022

Jim Moran

This Worthy Knight and his amazing family are very involved in all things “family oriented” ….in fact you could say family is kinda his thing when it comes to the Knights! This Brother Knight heads up such family centered events as the Council Picnic, the Easter Egg Hunt, the Council Christmas party and helps with many other events such as the Coats for Kids Grandparents initiative and the Council Movie night. He also volunteers on many other occasions whenever asked. He can be depended on to ensure our Combined Degree Exemplifications go as effectively as possible. It is my pleasure to recognize Jim Moran and his family as our December Family of the month!

November 2022

Bruce and Kathy Stevens

This is a couple that many of you will recognize because you will see them involved in so many activities with the Knights and our community. Last month was another opportunity to support the Special Olympics at the Fall Games soccer venue. This couple spent many hours there setting up, running the volunteer tent, and making sure everything ran smoothly…as they do EVERY year! Additionally, this couple helps run the Blood Drives that we have on a regular basis. The Red Cross would be lost without their expertise as a support partner. This Sir Knight is at every meeting, helping to set up and take down in his role as a Guard. It is my pleasure to award the Family of the Month to Bruce and Kathy Stevens!

August 2022

Don and Nancy Poole

July 2022

Blakeburn family

This Sir Knight is a natural leader of our Council. He has been a long-time member of St. Teresa of Calcutta Council and has served in many leadership positions including Grand Knight, District Deputy, Faithful Navigator and even a State Officer. His knowledge of the Order and guidance to me and other Grand Knights is invaluable! His wife is equally involved in our Knights of Columbus Order. She has served as President of the Ladies Auxiliary and positions on the State level. They are a pillar in our Ascension Parish and always willing to help where needed. When you hear the question asked: “How can you say no to a Brother Knight?” there is no doubt who might be asking. It is my pleasure to award our Family of the Month to Roy and Diana Blakeburn

June 2022

Sokolsky family

This Brother Knight, and an important member of his family was instrumental in making sure that our recent Car Show fund raiser was a big success! This brother Knight made sure that we had our “T”s crossed and our “I”s dotted when it came to the accounting of all the funds that had to be managed. Additionally, his daughter was the creative director for all of the marketing flyers and website behind the Car Show. This gave our second annual Rollin with the Knights a polished look to participants and guests alike. Our Brother Knight is part of a very competent and trustworthy financial team here at St. Teresa of Calcutta Council. We are lucky to have them supporting us. It is my honor to recognize our Family of the Month to Bernie and Amanda Sokolsky!

May 2022

50th Anniversary Committee

Our Family of the Month is no stranger to the Church and this Council. This group pulled off a truly astonishing feat: uniting the parish in a year long celebration of our church community. This included build up events like the Sunday Sandals cookout last summer and an outstanding night of entertainment and fun in the Anniversary Dinner Dance. All of this was capped off last weekend when the parish moved outdoors to a 1000-person tent to celebrate the Church of the Ascension’s 50th Anniversary in a truly exemplary manner. The necessary planning for these events took countless hours and plenty of engagement with our fellow parishioners. We all owe them a great debt of gratitude for bringing the community together during a challenging year to celebrate something we hold so dear: our Church. It is my greatest honor to present the Family of the Month award to Church of the Ascension’s 50th Anniversary Committee.

April 2022

Levins family

Our Family of the Month is no stranger to the Church, Council, and the Ladies’ Auxiliary. In the last month they have been incredibly busy organizing large scale events for the Council and the Auxiliary. The better half of this pairing helped the Ladies run a plant sale during the Church’s craft show, an event that raised over $700 for the Auxiliary. The other half has done his share of raising money for the Council, but did an even better job spending it this past month! It all went to a good cause in operating the Tidewater Area’s hospitality room at the State Convention. In addition to being the hands-down best social venue at the Convention, it promoted a high level of camaraderie among Brothers from all corners of the state; something that was needed after being canceled in the prior years because of the Pandemic. This is not to minimize this Brother’s other roles in coordinating the efforts of District 4 on a daily basis. At the end of the day, all District cats were herded and all Brothers enjoyed a great time because of his efforts. It is my greatest honor to present the Family of the Month award to the Levins Family.

March 2022

Cooper Family

Our Family of the Month is no stranger to the Church or the Council. They are regulars at Mass every Sunday and are also participants in the Parish’s Family Faith Formation Program. This past month, this Family stepped up in a big way with the Council and the Church. At our March Fish Fry, they helped collect tickets and serve meals to fellow parishioners, greatly adding to the fellowship experienced by all that evening. They have also taken it upon themselves to bring young families to the forefront of our Parish through an organized potluck. This was more than just a meet and greet, it was a thoughtful event focused on fellowship and fostering connections between young families within the Parish. There is no doubt that our community is better as a whole because of events like this. It is my greatest honor to present the Family of the Month award to the Cooper Family.

January 2022

Social Justice Ministry

Our Family of the Month is not a family in the traditional sense, but, nonetheless, is a critical part of our Parish Community. In the last few months this ministry made contact with Commonwealth Catholic Charities and volunteered to sponsor two refugee families from Afghanistan. In January alone, Ruth Brogan and her team posted donation lists, collected furniture, and ultimately prepared two different residences for the newly arriving families. They rallied our Parish Community together to help 10 new members of our community establish roots in Virginia Beach. In short, they represent the very best of what the Church of the Ascension has to offer. It is my greatest honor to present the Family of the Month award to the Church of the Ascension’s Social Justice Ministry.

November 2021

Rockwell family

Our Family of the Month is no stranger to the Council and Parish, in fact, they are participants in both at every level! Their efforts in the month of November were truly in that they combined all the elements that we as Knights and Sir Knights hold so dear such as citizenship, honoring family, and community. This Brother proudly displayed the colors of the Assembly during Virginia Beach’s Veterans Day parade. As a family, they organized and led the re-dedication of our Church’s Flagpole in a wonderful tribute that honored the sacrifices of the past and present by our Veterans. This was followed up on the same evening by an impactful ceremony where the community retired hundreds of worn out American flags. I don’t think there is anything that this family wouldn’t do for our Church or Council. It is my greatest honor to present the Family of the Month award to the Rockwell Family.

October 2021

Special Olympics Virginia

Sir Knight Bruce Stevens accepts from Grand Knight Rob Knoerzer for the following:
Our Family of the Month is truly unique: it is an organization that has had a tremendous impact on thousands of athletes within the Commonwealth. They were founded in 1968 with the goal of providing year-round sports training and athletic competition in a variety of sports for children and adults with intellectual disabilities. Their mission is to deliver continuing opportunities to develop physical fitness, demonstrate courage, experience joy and participate in a sharing of gifts, skills and friendship with their families, other athletes and the community. This was epitomized in the execution of the Fall Championships in Virginia Beach this past weekend. It is my greatest honor to present the Family of the Month award to Special Olympics Virginia.

September 2021

Church of the Ascension Ministries

Our Family of the Month is no stranger to the Council or Parish and in many ways, it is the Council and Parish! Our Parish’s ministries are the engine that makes our beloved Church run on a daily basis. If you take one look around any event at Ascension, you will see eager volunteers that do everything from helping manage the Church’s finances to handing out food to those in need through the Social Justice Ministry. They are the smiling faces at the coffee bar, assisting with the Liturgy, and educating our children in their Faith Formation journeys. It is the motivated participants of Ascension’s ministries that make all of these great programs and opportunities possible. It is my greatest honor to present the Family of the Month award to the Church of the Ascension Ministries.

August 2021

Kang family

Our Family of the Month is no stranger to the Council or Parish, and they are dedicated servants to both. They epitomize what it means to be a tight-knight Catholic family that is active in the Parish. You will regularly see them participating as a family in Council events such as the recent Exemplification ceremony and the Father McGivney Prayer Hour. Speaking of the Prayer Hour, this Brother actually took the lead on organizing and executing the event this past month. He took time out of his weekend to broaden his faith by participating in the Church’s Missionary Disciple Workshop. As if that wasn’t enough, this Brother is also a key member of the Parish’s Finance Council and Money Counters. At every turn, this family always makes time for our Church community, and we are better for it. It is my greatest honor to present the Family of the Month award to the Kang Family.

July 2021

Bruce and Kathy Stevens

Our Family of the Month is no stranger to the Council or Parish, and they are dedicated servants to both. While COVID restrictions slowed down Council and Church activities over the last year and a half, this family kept going strong in their drive to help the community. During this summer alone, Bruce and Kathy have organized two blood drives, providing a total of 66 pints to the American Red Cross and meeting their critical needs. They have also been generous with their time with other activities at the Church--dedicating an entire Sunday to help the Parish kick off its 50th Anniversary celebration at the Sunday Sandals Cookout. The Stevens Family is also playing a key role in the Council’s Faith in Action programs by taking the lead in organizing our participation in the 2021 Fall Special Olympics program. These efforts demonstrate a supreme dedication to Life and is in keeping with the core principles of the Knights of Columbus. At every turn, this family always makes time for our Church community, and we are better for it. We can always count on their warm smiles and marvel out their constant efforts to give back to the community on a daily basis. It is my greatest honor to present the Family of the Month award to Bruce and Kathy Stevens.

July 2019

David and Marjorie Lamb

Our husband of the family of the month is a 3rd generation Knight. The wife of our family is the daughter of a PGK. Their 3 kids (now 31, 30, and 27 years old) were raised in our Catholic faith. Both sons are knights and their youngest son is PGK from the Virginia Tech council.

The foundation of family started with our family of the month parents. This family just celebrated their 33 years anniversary. They are considered the foundation of the 9 AM MASS at St. Gregrory’s. For 30 years the father has been an usher, our mother for just short of 20 years has taught Children’s Liturgy of the Word (CLOW). For most of this time she has served as coordinator for all the teachers of this ministry. For the last decade both have served as Eucharistic Ministers and the father will at times serve as the captain coordinating the Eucharistic Ministers.
Outside of the MASS, their biggest impact has been in CCD where the father has been a teacher for 25 years. He has put together several memorable lessons, the most memorable being a several week reflection on the Stations of the Cross when Lent is approaching. His impact has been so positive that there are frequently past students stopping by his classroom in the 15 minutes before CCD starts and almost any 6thgraders with older siblings that have been in his class specifically request to be placed in his class. Over the past decade the mother has joined him and they teach the 6th grade class together. Between CCD and CLOW the lasting impact they have on their students is apparent in the number of former students that eventually ask them to be confirmation sponsors. Additionally, our father of the month spent a year as a Parish Council member at St Gregory.
Our father of the month has been an active member in both 9056 and 12117. He has spent decades as a member of the 1st degree team, a good number of years serving as the degree team captain. He also served several years as Treasurer for 12117. For 19 years, our families of the month headed up the 12117 ministry to visit Our Lady of Perpetual Help (nursing home) once a month. In these monthly visits they would spend half an hour leading the residents in the rosary and an hour playing Bingo. The impact they had at OLPH was so great that the father of our family of the month eventually became a board member. On top of everything else he has done, for the last six years travels once a quarter up to Washington, DC where ushers at the National Basilica.

A couple of years ago they realized at times new registrations fell through the cracks at St Gregory. Instead of ignoring it, they took ownership of the problem and set about fixing it. Working with the priests they put formed a brand-new Embrace Ministry focused on welcoming new members. Every time St Gregory gets a new member, they get a welcoming letter from the Embrace Ministry explaining some of the ministries at St Gregory and asking what ministries they would like to become involved in. The ministry tracks these interests and puts the new members in touch with the other ministries. Additionally, a couple times a year the ministry holds a social for the new members to socialize with each other and meet other members of the church.
Their community involvement reaches beyond the church, the mother of our family spent 17 years as an elementary school special education teacher and another 13 years as a kindergarten teacher. She spent countless hours, both at school and at home, to give the kids the best education she could. In her last several years of teaching she was also the coordinator of all the kindergarten teachers in her school. David spent countless hours becoming deeply involved in his kid’s activities when they were growing up. In scouts he was the Assistant Pack Leader and a Council Member for the Troop. He spent several years as a staff member at the Catholic Committee of Scouting’s annual Retreatoree held in September for both Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts. He spent a couple years as an assistant coach in baseball and a couple years assisting with St Gregory’s Youth Group. He chaperoned multiple trips to Steubenville, OH and a trip to National Catholic Youth Convention (NCYC) in Atlanta, GA.

Our couple is extremely motivated in their Christian life and have given whole heartedly to the council, our parish and our community. They can always be seen with welcoming smiles and open arms. Ways and Means Committee - Church of the Ascension

Our Family of the Month includes Brother Knights, Ladies Auxiliary, and fellow parishioners. They have supported Saint Teresa of Calcutta Council for years as volunteers for our events, donors to our charities, and participants of our functions. Most recently, they ensured the complete success of our sold-out Culture of Life (COL) Spaghetti Dinner Charity Fundraiser. From the initial planning meetings to the actual event, they worked endlessly in advertising, scheduling the ‘world-famous’ entertainment, selling tickets, setting up the ACC, providing the food and drinks, and creating a fun, family atmosphere for all in attendance. Their efforts resulted in the first true sell-out, highest ever amount of 50/50 tickets sold (profits to our Council’s COL charity funds), one of (if not the) most successful Ladies Auxiliary Bake Sale (profits benefiting their scholarship program), AND raised nearly $2,000 for Church of the Ascension’s ministries. These Ladies Auxiliary, time and time again have been available to assist, if not directly responsibility for the success and smooth running of many of our joint ventures. Starting lasts year with the Officer Instillation in July it was the Ladies Auxiliary that took the lead and made this event a success. In December when the council held their annual Christmas party, it was again the Ladies Auxiliary that made this a huge success. From setup, decorating, preparing desert and helping with the cleanup it was the ladies standing with the Council to insure a good time was had by all. In January during the Annual Spaghetti Dinner once again the Ladies Auxiliary were there hours before setting up, decorating, preparing desert for this event and assisting with the cleanup.

In March of this year during the Councils Officers meeting the Grand Knight informed the Officers that we had been asked by Rev. Fr. Daniel to organize and run in conjunction with the Ladies Auxiliary a Going Away Dinner in honor of Archbishop Paul Ruzoka. Don Poole took on this task for the Council and contacted Stephanie Gruning and between the two of them this event was pulled off in a very successful manor.

Specifically, both continue to support numerous council events with setups, participating and they also stay behind when others have left to assist in the cleanup. Both were present at our annual KOVAR drive in front of the ABC store and I was informed that the speech that was given during the Masses by Kevin were instrumental in the high amount of contributions that we received during the fund drive. Both Kevin and Glenn have already stepped up to assist the Grand Knight Elect in next year's success by taking on both Administrative and Officer roles.

He continues to head up the Culture of Life Program for the Council which included the Walk-for-Life Bus trip to Washington, DC / the Memorial Mass and Rosary for the Unborn, the Baby Bottle Collection and the Spaghetti Dinner.

Ken is also a member of the Parrish Council and the Respect for Life Ministry at the Church of the Ascension. Johnna is also a member of the KofC Ladies Auxiliary and she and Ken are always together as a couple for many if not all the Council and Ladies Auxiliary’s events. Special note of interest is the amount of details that Ken and Johnna took to insure the Walk for Life Bus trip to Washington, DC was a true success.

December 2016

John & Jimmie Ruark

Parishioners John & Jimmie Ruark are not officiated with the Knights of Columbus but are very active members here at the Church of the Ascension. Every Sunday John and Jimmie are manning the Church’s Store. The Knights of Columbus annually sell their Keep Christ in Christmas Cards and in years past the Brother Knights have handled these sales. This year the Church of Ascension decided to cut back in the amount of soliciting and selling that takes place in the commons after each mass. At first we thought this would be detrimental to our efforts to sell the Christmas cards. The cards were given to John and Jimmie at the Church Store and without hesitation they started selling the cards. Two weeks before Christmas I was informed that all the cards had been sold.

For these reasons I am honored to present Family of the Month for December 2016 to the Ruark Family – John & Jimmie Ruark

November 2016

Bill and Valerie Rockwell

This Brother Knight and his Wife Valerie seemed to be present at all activities that the Council and the Parish conducts. Both are Eucharistic Minister at Sunday Mass and Bill seconds as a Lector. Bill volunteered to be the Director of Training for the Council and has already conducted three specialized training sessions as well as several mini training sessions during council meetings. Bill and Valerie have donated several items to the On Demand 911 team’s request for furniture and appliances required by the Franciscan Sisters of Saint Joseph in Virginia Beach after their convent was flooded during Hurricane Matthew in October of this year. Bill is the Three-Year Trustee for the council and is a very active member of the admissions, retention, and membership (A.R.M.) committee that was formed in an effort not only to recruit new brother knights, but, more importantly, to bring back into the council those brother knights that have become inactive. Bill brought in one new member this month, and attended that brother’s Admissions Degree on December 5th in a show of support for this new Brother. With all the items that Bill contributes to the council I am certain this has an effect on his family life. This work would probable not be possible without the support and understanding from Bill’s wife, Valerie. For these reasons I am honored to present Family of the Month for November 2016 to the Rockwell Family – William and Valerie.

October 2016

Rick and Mary Bish

This Brother Knight, his Wife and Daughters seemed to be present at all activities that the Council and the Parish conducts. Mary is the Coordinator of Religious Formation at the Church of the Ascension and Daughter Kate serves as an Altar Server usually at the 845 Mass. Early in the fraternal year Rich stepped up and assumed the role of Co- Chairman for the Family Program. Rich is also a PFN of Assembly 2588.

Although during the past several weeks it might have appeared that Rich was nowhere to be seen around the Council, it appears that Hurricane Matthew can be blamed on his absence. During flooding caused by Hurricane Matthew, which hit Virginia Beach in early October, the Convent of the Franciscan Sisters of Saint Joseph in Virginia Beach suffered extensive damage from the rising waters. Unfortunately, the Sisters did not have flood insurance.

When the disaster struck, GK Joseph Bernard of St. Matthew Council 10601 was the first Knight on the scene; he waded through the convent in water half way up his thighs. In response to calls for help Brothers of Saint Matthew Council, arrived on the scene and they started removing the waterlogged rugs and carpeting and padding and cleaning the appliances. Fr. Daniel Malingumu, Pastor of Church of the Ascension in Virginia Beach and the Grand Knight of St. Teresa of Calcutta Council, No. 12117 in Virginia Beach came and knew of a Brother Knight with expertise in recovery and restoration particularly water removal. The GK of Council 12117 called Brother Rich and without hesitation, dropping what he was doing on a Sunday afternoon, Rich stated, “I am on my way.” Rich arrived at the Convent and began his assessment of the damage. Over the past month and a half the repair work at the convent is proceeding at a record pace and without any delay. Much can be attributed to the Brother Rich’s response and actions on the first day when the Grand Knight asked for his assistance.

It is my pleasure to present Family of the Month for October 2016 to the Bish Family – Richard – Mary – Kate - Savannah.

September 2016

Mike and Ann Maliniak

This Brother Knight and his wife seem to be present at all activities that the Council and the Parish conducts. Mike and Ann are members of the Ways and Means Committee and are instrumental in the planning and organizing of many of the functions the Church conducts to raise revenue for various ministries. Ann is an active member of the Ladies Auxiliary and furthermore was present on numerous concert events this past season along with Mike. Mike acted as Banker for many if not all of the concerts he and Ann worked. Mike is also a PGK and PFN and has held numerous officers position within the councils he has been in. If this was not enough, Mike is the current President of the Hampton Roads Combined Veterans Organization. Mike oversees and supervises the planning and execution of the Annual Veterans Day Parade conducted at the Ocean Front in Virginia Beach in November. Mike is also responsible for the collection and distribution of item for our Veterans at the Hampton Veterans Hospital. Mike also serves and a Eucharistic Minister and a Lector at Sunday Masses.

August 2016

Don and Nancy Poole

A knight for just over a year, Brother Don and his wife, Nancy have been involved in numerous events hosted by the council. Quick to start the cleanup process after our sponsored events he and his wife, also have worked several concert events.

Asked by the Grand Knight to assist as a program chairman, without hesitation his response was: “Where do you need me?” Brother Don was given the responsibility of the Family program and took off running. Brother Don also stepped up and stated he would handle the “Keep Christ in Christmas” program – stating it sounds like a Family item to me. Recently the chairman from the Virginia State Council needed a council point of contact to assist with the Special Olympics Fall games being held in Virginia Beach. Again Brother Don stepped up and stated, “I got this”. When the Grand Knight need a Brother to lead the council in the saying of the Rosary prior to the council meetings Brother Don again stated: “I got this.”

Brother Don and Nancy find the time to assist in several ministries at the Church of the Ascension. They are both involved in Lector and Eucharistic Ministries, both are on the Parrish Council and both conduct Eucharistic Ministry services at Our Lady of Perpetual Help – nursing center here in Virginia Beach. They are also seen assisting in the church choir on occasions Brother Don is also a sacristan and usually assists with this ministry two to three times a month.

It is my pleasure to present Family of the Month for August 2016 to the Poole Family.

July 2016

Vic and Stephanie Gruning

This Gruning family is very active within both the Church and the Council. Vic is an active member of the council and assists in every if not all events that we as a council support. He is very active in the Church Music Ministry and an active participant in working our biggest fundraiser event of the year – the concerts.

Stephanie is very active in the Church as a Eucharistic Minister, Lector and a Sacristy. She is also the past and current President of the Mother Teresa of Calcutta Ladies Auxiliary. With her direction and support this years officer’s Installation turned out to be a very successful event. The Ladies Auxiliary under the guidance of Stephanie took charge of this event, deciding many if not all of the details that were required to many this a successful installation. They decided what food would be provided and even created table runners in the Colors of our namesake Mother Teresa. This assistance relieved a great task on the Newly Elected Grand Knight. The State Deputy commented on how well the installation went and was very impressed with the total outcome. This is a great reflection on the Ladies Auxiliary under the direction and guidance of Stephanie.
It is my privilege to present Family of the Month for July 2016 to the Gruning Family.

June 2016

Bruce and Kathy Stevens

The Stevens family has been instrumental in the council’s larger fundraiser – the concerts. The organizing and working the concerts starts well before our first showing in May. Months prior, Bruce and Kathy Stevens are contacting Brothers, setting up the TEAMS training and scheduling the concerts for the entire season. The months of June and July can become a total nightmare at times when Bruce and Kathy are trying to get rosters filled before the cutoff dates required by Legends. Without this type of dedication to our largest fundraiser our annual budget would be less approximately $15,000. Kathy also acts as banker for many of the events requiring her and Bruce to stay later than everyone else working an event.
If this was not enough Bruce and Kathy Stevens take on organizing and working a Red Cross Blood Drive every 8 to 10 weeks. They were instrumental in researching and designing a banner to be utilized in an effort to bring in more donors during out Blood Drive events.
It is my pleasure to present Family of the Month for June 2016 to the Stevens Family – Bruce and Kathy.

This Sir Knight is someone who has a wealth of knowledge about our Council and the Father McGivney Assembly because he is actively involved in both. You will see him working tirelessly at concerts selling beer right alongside his wife, Ann. If you don’t see him there, you will find him collecting food for the hungry at Mass or supporting our Membership Drive dressed in full regalia! This Knight is our go-to contact for the business of the Assembly; especially in Patriotic matters such as our annual Veteran’s Day Parade. When a need arose to solicit additional help to spearhead the concert fund-raising committee, Tony stepped up to the plate and answered the call. In the month of July alone, the Council participated in no less than 8 concerts that generated $700 each.

Bruce and Kathy Stevens

Sir Knight Bruce Stevens and his wife, Kathy, are at the heart and soul of the Mother Teresa of Calcutta Council 12117. Bruce has been a Knight in the Council for over seven years and every year he has been a key factor to the success of the Council. He and Kathy have chaired the number one fund raiser for the Council for the past 7 years, bringing in over $10,000 annually. Additionally, Bruce, Kathy and their son Jonathan volunteer at almost every fund raising event. Beyond the fund raisers, Bruce and Kathy chair each of the Blood Drives to support the local Red Cross. Kathy has been President of the Ladies Auxiliary 3 out of the last 5 years. In June, Bruce and Kathy worked every fund raising event and chaired a Blood Drive. Bruce also volunteered for the annual KOVAR drive.

Our Family of the Month – are relatively new to our organization, yet they actively participate as old-hands! This Family of the Month includes not one, but two Brothers – with this father-son team having recently taken their First Degree in March of this year. Yet they have attended and assisted wherever needed at every Council and Parish event we’ve held. These Brothers epitomize the adage of getting involved and making a mark. Mom & Wife has also routinely shown her support of Our Order and Our Council through her frequent communications and assistance in spreading the word of our activities and causes. She is a key member of all parish activities and operations, serving as the Parish Secretary. Their energy, enthusiasm and support embody the tenents of Our Order. Brothers, I trust that you will join me in recognizing our

April 2015

Mother Teresa of Calcutta Ladies Auxiliary

Mother Teresa Ladies Auxiliary has provided tremendous and unwavering support to Our Council, in addition to executing their own charitable endeavors. In the month of April specifically, the Ladies organized an "Easter Basket" Campaign with the Parish of Church of the Ascension. They collected monetary donations and goods, combined with funds raised during their numerous bake sales, to construct 40 Easter Baskets to deliver to children in need enrolled in the ForKids organization. Our Ladies also volunteered to stuff more than 200 plastic Easter eggs used for Our Council's 3rd Annual Parish Easter Egg Hunt held after the 1030 Easter mass. More than 40 excited children participated in a fun-filled event. The Mother Teresa Ladies Auxiliary has worked side-by-side with Our Council and truly demonstrate "Faith In Action!"

March 2015

Robert and Claudia Storms

Our Family of the Month - Brothers, I have chosen to memorialize a true Knight, and to recognize his Lady and their family as our family of the month for the strength, courage and inspiration he and they have provided to Our Council, and to so very many of us individually, as they invited us to unite as a church, a parish, and a KofC family in a time of need. His bride, their children and their grandchildren stood strong in what could have been a time of sorrow, and showed us how to celebrate life, and we were all strengthened! Though not active in our events this month, in fact not even physically present, nevertheless, there has not been a single event or activity that we have conducted which has not brought forth stories of their influence, or tales of their efforts in working and sacrificing to make Our Council what it is today. In this month of one of our most successful recruiting events in memory, we can recall the untold numbers of men this Brother personally brought into Our Order. And as we collectively jump feet first into another Concert season, even the newest among us has been told of, or can recount personally, the impact and influence this family had on establishing our Council’s largest fundraising activity for nearly the past decade. Ever with us in spirit, he provides the shining example to each of us to take care of our families, take care of strangers, take care of ‘his’ Knights, and protect our church. Brothers, I trust that you will join me in recognizing our March 2015 Family of the Month Past Grand Knight – Sir Knight Bob & Claudia Storms

February 2015

Mark and Debbie Wilsey

No picture available. Our Family of the Month includes a husband and wife tandem who have served the parish of Ascension – both the church and the community for more than a decade of selfless, compassionate, unhesitant giving, sacrifice and generosity. This team has yet to join our Knights of Columbus Family formally, but they clearly live the principles of Our Order of Charity, Unity, Fraternity and Patriotism. For at least ten years (I’m sure it is longer), they have been the face of Church of the Ascension’s annual Homeless Shelter volunteers. Devoting untold hours planning, executing and truly mentoring and providing life-saving assistance to hundreds (by now thousands!) of people suffering from the effects of homelessness, joblessness, lack of family – this brave pair has consistently filled those voids. More often than not taking money from their own pockets, they have provided kindness and hope for those in need. And their infectious cheerfulness and genuine love for their fellow man presents us with real hero’s to emulate. Brothers, please recognize our February 2015 Family of the Month ... Mark & Debbie Wilsey

January 2015

Steve and Nancy Genovesi

Our Family of the Month epitomize the phrase “Big Things Come in Small Packages!” A KofC Family for 17 years, they continue their support of our parish and Our Council whenever called. Icons at Church of the Ascension community building events, they span the personality spectrum – one quiet and reserved, the other flamboyant and extroverted – they complement each other perfectly. Most recently, resuming two of their traditionally recognized positions, they played significantly key roles in hosting one of our most successful fundraising events. Barely after our Council elections in June, this couple approached me to volunteer whenever I needed them, and specifically for this event. Beginning earlier in the day than the rest of us were even thinking about it, our Brother reported to the church kitchen to begin preparing the evening’s feast. And hours before the event – “The General” arrived to inspect the troops, hand out assignments, and orchestrate our volunteer work crew with machine-like precision. As in countless events of the past, this dynamic duo ensured every one of our ‘guests’ had a relaxing time and a great meal. Primarily as a result of his cooking and her serving line prowess – Our Council’s Annual Culture of Life Spaghetti Dinner Fundraiser contributed to record-setting collections by Our Council, Our Ladies Auxiliary and the Church’s Ways & Means Committee. We will be donating more than $900.00 to local Pro-Life organizations due to their supportive efforts. Brothers, please join in me in congratulating our

December 2014

Jim and Marie Moran

Our Family of the Month has served Our Council for several years hosting fun, entertaining and memorable events for our KofC Family. Most recently, as in some years past, this Knight and his bride put together an extremely well-attended celebration to kick off the holiday season. From flyers and advertisements, to personally cooking the delicious entrée, to coordinating holiday-spirit contests, to arranging activities for the children and a special guest visit for all, this family team went above and beyond in providing Our Council Family with a splendid Christmas Party. This Brother also joined our merry band of carolers to spread some joy to OLPH residents and several parish families unable to get out. Add volunteering for the Surfin Santa race registration Council fundraiser, and raising their own family and you have one busy duo! Our Familiy of the Month for December is Jim & Marie Moran !

November 2014

Edna and Tony Constand

We chose this family due to their tireless efforts, not just recently, but for more than 36 years of service spanning the entire 'life' of our own Council. Ms. Edna has worked as the Church of the Ascension Parish Office Manager since our groundbreaking. Over the 17 years of our Mother Teresa of Calcutta Council's existence, Edna has supported our events and causes, expertly scheduling and deconflicting the church's facilities and our more than two dozen active ministries. Husband Tony is equally dedicated to our parish, and though he is not a Brother Knight himself, he and Edna have enthusiastically participated in many of our KofC socials and fundraising activities. As Edna retires from her parish duties, we know that she and Tony will remain loyal supporters of the Knights of Columbus and our charitable ideals.

October 2014

James and Barbara Byrd

Our Family of the Month are relative newcomers to Our KofC Family, but they have truly “hit the deckplates running”! This Brother lives and breathes the pillar tenants of Our Order, and he tirelessly reminds each of us about what is means exactly to be a Knight. Espousing ‘esprit de corps’, he continually seeks out ways of promoting our affiliation and our works. He has applied countless hours and personal dollars in procuring KofC and Mother Teresa of Calcutta (Our Namesake) emblematics, which he selflessly donates to our members through the Good of the Order at meetings and as welcome material to our newest members. Both he and his wife are active in our parish, serving as Greeters at Mass, and sponsors in the RCIA Program. He devotes untold hours as a member of the Ascension Construction Crew (ACC) performing all manner of maintenance, repair and landscaping for the church, while his Lady is an active member of our own Mother Teresa KofC Ladies Auxiliary, participating in each of their fundraisers and community service projects. Together they are a formidable and shining example of what we can each b and do for Our Holy Mother Church and fellow man. Brothers, Please join me in congratulating and thanking Our Family of the Month – James & Barbara Byrd !

September 2014

Lanny and Shelly White

This dynamic duo, led by FDD/PFN/PGK, stand as models of volunteerism and charity within our Council and Church. Whether driving cross state to visit our former pastor, cross town to participate in District KofC events; dropping everything at a moments notice to visit and assist a fellow Brother Knight and family suffering from cancer; participate in patriotic events such as volunteer refurbishment of a WWII historic BB with their Assembly family; provide sage advice to the current GK as a Trustee; spearhead retention efforts in bringing Brothers-in-Arrears back into the active fold; or passionately leading the local KOVAR campaign - All of this while accepting the task of assisting their adult children and helping to raise their newest grandchild. Makes one ashamed to say "I'm too busy". The epitome of a KofC Family!

August 2014

Donald and Julie Bressette

Our Family of the Month consists of a dynamic, energetic, and always happy husband and wife team. Having raised two successful children and now enjoying their baby granddaughter, they continue to support the church and our Council in every event and activity. Our brother currently serves as one of our key [Council] Program Directors and can be counted on to respond at any moment to every request and task without hesitation. He has been directly responsible for the back-stage work resulting in several successful events to kick-off our fraternal year. He is also an extremely adept craftsman and has helped several brothers with scheduled and emergent home repairs and renovations. His lovely bride is a teaching assistant (?), and an active member of our Ladies Auxiliary, always present to lend a hand preparing for Council events. Together, this team also volunteers countless hours in working at our Council's #1 fundraising activity at the Virginia Beach Amphitheater. Together they epitomize the meaning of a KofC Family. Brothers, please join in me in congratulating Don and Julie Bressette.

July 2014

Philip and Jan Lynch

Our Family of the Month consists of an ever-present, yet often hidden tag-team duo. Consistently found throughout the Ascension facilities, between the two of them, I don’t think there is a question asked that isn’t immediately answered – or a key to appear which unlocks many of the parish’s best kept secret treasures. Our Brother covers everything from kitchen patrol to hospitality czar to one-man clean-up crew. And like our Knight of the Month, a virtual dynamo and reliable “Liquid Lounge” teammate, he has bested more than 67 percent of our entire TIPS trained cadre in number of concerts worked. His lovely bride is also extremely active in the church, from what I hear runs a mean game of Bunco, and though not one of her top bucket list items, she cheerfully accepted the nomination and election to lead our very active Ladies Auxiliary through this fraternal year. They contributed an exceptional amount of work in helping to host an extremely successful Installation of Officers event, which has garnered praise from State, District and Local Knights of Columbus officials, Brothers, Family and Friends. Together they epitomize the meaning of a KofC Family. Brothers, please join in me in congratulating SK Phil and President Jan Lynch.

June 2014

PGK Rob & Karen Wagenman

Our Family of the Month barely let the smoke clear or the dust settle from his efforts of last month, and he’s already ramped up and taken charge of events in July! Unfortunately, it’s hard to try to build up suspense as it becomes obvious way to soon who this family is, but here goes. This Brother Knight and his family continued their steadfast yearlong efforts into the final month of our fraternal year. Whether serving at the Amphitheater concerts in our largest fund-raising event, meeting with parishioners and other Knights to assist in times of financial difficulty, donating blood at our hosted blood drive, or single-handedly orchestrating our annual Awards & Appreciation luncheon - this "Team" does it all! Our Brother's wife (a full-time working educator and member of our Ladies Auxiliary), and their [two] children, have attended every Council event and supported our programs with energy and enthusiasm. This Brother, supported by his family, also spent many personal hours making a final June recruiting push which gained 3 new Owners – pushing us over our insurance quota, and earning our Council the "Star Council” award for 2013-2014. This Brother took the time to conduct a thorough turnover to his relief, focusing on setting the council up for yet another stellar, award winning year. And he did it all as an active duty U.S. Navy serviceman. Brothers, please join in me in congratulating our
June 2014 Family of the Month
PGK Rob & Karen Wagenman

May 2014

Frank and Kelly Klepadlo

Frank and Kelly are very active in every Council event and many events at Church of the Ascension. They both helped with set-up and clean-up at the Church Spring Festival. They are mainstays at the amphitheater helping to raise money for our many charities. Frank also participated in the Polar Plunge this year to raise money for Special Olympics.

April 2014

David and Margie Lamb

The Lamb family is a "Knights of Columbus Family". David and both sons are Knights in Council 12117. This month, David and Marjorie not only participated in the "Vision Walk 2014" in Virginia Beach, they were part of the Walk Committee, serving as the Chairs of the Family Committee. David and Marjorie's daughter, Maggie, suffers from Stargart's Disease, so the Vision Walk is very important to the family. The Lamb team, Visions of Hope, raise $3,075 and helped the event raise over $97,600 to help fight blindness.

March 2014

Gary Wasson and Dianna Swenson

Gary and his daughter, Dianna, support a musical, Les Miserables School Edition, with people of all abilities. Not just any play... not just any musical... one with lots of love and support from many, this year's musical is now being shown twice in April and has a cast of 35 including those with other "abilities challenges". Grandson Collin is playing the role of the bishop and thanks to volunteer efforts, has had coaching in the privacy of his own room. Dianna is the leader of this production in so many ways, brining people of all abilities into her home for lessons and direction. Her efforts have touched the hearts of all involved.

February 2014

Scott and Amanda Tiemann

The Tiemann family is very active in the Council and the Parish. They participate in nearly every Knights sponsored event and, more often than not, their son Noah is there too. In February, all three of them assisted with the Spaghetti Dinner, helping to set-up, serve and clean-up. They also helped with a fund-raising event that raised $120 for our Council charities. The Tiemann's are a true example of a close knit family who practice charity and unity at home and in the community.

January 2014

Ken and Johnna Levins

DGK Ken Levins and wife Johnna were selected as January Family of the Month for their unyielding support to the Council. During the snow-days, Ken made a "full-court press' on the Council Activity Reports that were due to the State Council. The reports are required to achieve the State Deputy's Award. Ken and Johnna also helped with the Spaghetti Dinner and Pro-life weekend by coordinating volunteers for all events and assisting with the Baby Bottle Collection after all Masses that weekend.

December 2013

Tom and Joan Frost

The Frost family is relatively new to our council and the Church of the Ascension but they have been very active since their arrival. Tom volunteered to help sell "Keep Christ in Christmas" cards and to help review the council by-laws. Joan is an active member of the Ladies Auxiliary, helping with the Special Olympics Fall Championships and the Ladies coat drive. For this and more, the Frost family was selected as the Family of the Month for December.

November 2013

Rob and Karen Wilhelm

Rob and Karen are fixtures at the church and our Council events. Both are on the Ways and Means Committee. Rob is a Sacristan at the 12:30 Mass. Rob also volunteered to head up a fundraiser in which 16 members of the Council participated and earned $160 for our many charities.

October 2013

Bruce and Kathy Stevens

The Family of the Month for October is Bruce and Kathy Stevens. Together, Bruce and Kathy coordinated fund raising efforts at 25 concerts in 2013, raising over $18,000 to support our charities. Bruce is the Council Director this year and Kathy is serving her second year as President of the Ladies Auxiliary.

September 2013

Edward and Beverly Hobbs

The Family of the Month for September is Ed and Beverly Hobbs. Ed is a Past Grand Knight and currently serves as the Financial Secretary. He is also active in the Church, assisting with the Landings Program. Beverly supports the Council at practically every event and is a member of the Ladies Auxiliary. Both Ed and Beverly donated their time and talents, contributing to the success of our first ever golf tournament that helped raise over $2,700 to support our Charities.

August 2013

Anthony and Audra Spechio

Mother Teresa of Calcutta Council #12117 is proud to recognize the Tony and Audra Spechio family as the Family of the Month for August 2013l. Tony worked several concerts in July and August to support council fundraising efforts to support our many charities. When the call went out for people to be “bankers” at the concert venue, he stepped up and learned the job and filled in on a few concerts that he didn’t sign up for when our primary banker was dealing with health issues. Audra needs to be recognized for staying behind and taking care of the household while Tony is supporting the council.

July 2013

Mike and Mary Encarnacao

Mother Teresa of Calcutta Council #12117 is proud to recognize the Mike and Mary Encarnacao family as the Family of the Month for July 2013. Mike and Mary worked multiple concerts in July to support council fundraising efforts to support our many charities. When the opportunity to get new Council shirts came up, Mike took on the challenge and made it happen. In addition, Mike is serving as the Warden this year and has our new website up and running.

June 2013

Tom and Jennifer Sawyer

Our FofM for June 2013 is a great family within our church and Council. Both Tom and Jennifer are active with Scouts and Venture Crew as adult leaders. Daughter Samantha is involved with the Venture Crew and Son Jeremy is a member of our council and recently took his Third Degree. The entire family has supported Tom for the last two years as he served as Grand Knight for our Council. As if two consecutive years as GK was not enough, Tom volunteered to serve Assembly 2588 as Comptroller and was appointed as the State of Virginia Council Activities Director for the upcoming Fraternal Year. Mother Teresa of Calcutta Council #12117 is proud to recognize the Tom and Jennifer Sawyer family as the Family of the Month for June 2013.
