======================================

Lance Gordon Mitchell, age 80, of San Tan Valley, Arizona, formerly of Geneva, Illinois, peacefully passed away Monday, February 17, 2020 at his home with his loving family by his side.

He was born March 27, 1939, in Thomasville, Georgia, the son of Gordon and Shelly (Atkinson) Mitchell.

Lance graduated from Thomasville High School in 1957, shortly after Lance joined the United States Army Reserves where he served for 8 years. Lance worked in IT at Pratt Whitney Aircraft in Florida for many years until he was recruited by Montgomery Ward and moved to Chicago where he met the love of his life Sara.  He worked in IT for Union Special until he happily retired.  Lance was a 4th degree member of the Knights of Columbus and was an active volunteer at church serving as an usher, eucharistic minister, and lector.  Lance was a fun-loving, humor-filled man who valued his family and friends above all else.  He loved life’s simple pleasures . . . gardening, petting dogs, holding babies, baking, being Santa Claus for years, reading, and sipping fine bourbon by an indoor or outdoor fire.  Lance also had a spicy side and never shied away from a heated debate about politics, patriotism, or anything else he felt passionately about.  Lance was the first person to help a friend in need, and his home was always open to anyone who wanted to pop in.  He will be remembered for his smiling face, never ending jokes/stories, and contagious laughter.

He is survived by his loving wife of 50 years Sara (Amore), children Cristi of Boston, Allison (Derek) Stefansson of St. Charles, and Paul of Chicago; grandchildren Joshua Wakim and Samuel and Mitchell Stefansson; and many other dear relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents and infant daughter Lisa Josephine.

Memorial Mass for Lance will be held Saturday, March 7, 2020 at 10:30 am at St. John Neumann Catholic Church, 2900 E. Main Street, St. Charles with Father Charles Warren Celebrant.

Burial will follow at Oak Hill Cemetery in Geneva.

Visitation will be held Friday, March 6 from 4:00 – 8:00 pm at Malone Funeral Home, 324 E. State Street (Route 38), Geneva, with a liturgical wake service at 7:45 pm with Deacon Greg D’Anna officiating.

In lieu of flowers, memorials to www.michaeljfox.org to aid in Parkinson’s research or Hospice of the Valley https://www.hov.org/donate/donate-now/ in Gilbert, Arizona would be appreciated.

CANCELED Honor Guard Mass for Special Needs, Holy Cross, Batavia, 4pm

Sunday, March 15, 2020

STARTING AT: 4:00

Hosted by Assembly #188

Location:

Holy Cross Church
2300 Main St
Batavia, IL 60510 US

Brother Knights,

On March 15th at Holy Cross, the Knights of Columbus will host a Mass for Special Needs Children and Adults.  I would be delighted if you could help spread the word about this event and we would love to have you come and participate.  Let's see if you can add this to your Church Bulletin.  This opportunity does not come along nearly enough.

As you and I know a lot of our special needs people are not comfortable or feel out of place during mass.  Their parents and guardians have a difficult time and often need to take turns over who can go to mass and who stays home with their child.  I want this to be a fun time for the family and everyone to feel welcome.  I've attached a short video of another Special Needs Mass that I'm using as a template that I'm sure you will enjoy.

After the Mass we will have a light dinner in the basement of the church, note there is a ground floor entrance as well as an elevator in case we have those who need additional assistance.  Wheel Chairs are always welcome.  This will be a full mass with communion as well as the anointing of oil for those that cannot take communion.

As a member of the Knights of Columbus, I have been able to go out and collect donations for helping organizations with Intellectual Disabilities.  Collecting donations through our ID Drive just doesn't help to bring us together so we need to go further and actually interact with those we wish to help.  In the past, I have worked with Special Olympics, Marklund, Valley Sheltered Workshop, Special Camps, and others.  My favorite time is when I can actually interact dance and play with the kids young and old.   I'm truly excited about being able to have a mass at church where special needs people are comfortable and accepted, who can be a part of and yet participate with what we have to share.

Please watch this video on YouTube it is from a mass that was put on in Carol Stream.

After Watching the video .. You will see there are several roles that need to be played and I'm hoping to bring forward members of SPRED to participate .. We will need Servers, Ushers, Readers, Eucharistic Ministers, and Music.  If you can help me find candidates to help I would greatly appreciate it.

I have already invited and spread the word to:

Marklund

Giant Steps

Fox Valley Special Recreation

Association of Individual Development

Special Camps

Valley Sheltered Workshop

Special Olympics

The excitement is Here with Christ

Thank you,

Kevin Callahan
